Saint Christopher is a Catholic Christian hero of Faith. He is a known martyr. St. Christopher was venerated as one of the 14 Auxiliary Saints (Holy Helpers) by the Church. St. Christopher Novena is especially prayed for ensuring a safe journey.
He is known as the patron saint of travelers, motorists, bachelors, transportation, storms, epilepsy, gardeners, holy death, and toothache.
Reprobus was the real name of St. Christopher and legend says he lived during the reign of the 3rd century Roman emperor Decius between (249–251) or alternatively under the emperor Maximinus Daia between (308–313).
There is no authentic history depicting the life of St. Christopher’s but there are stories being passed years long to reminisce his life.
Legend says St. Christopher was a giant and wanted to serve the world’s strongest king. Reprobus knew the existence of the Devil who was more powerful than the king and wanted to serve him but was later shocked to see The Devil being scared of the Holy Cross and learned about its fear.
Reprobus went looking for Jesus Christ to serve. In his later years, he assisted travelers in crossing the river. One day he helped a child to cross the river. Reprobus put great effort into crossing the river due to the water uprising and the child’s weight and managed to reach the opposite shore. The child revealed his true identity as Jesus and the weight he had been carrying was the weight of the whole world being saved by the blood of Christ.
In the Eastern tradition, St. Christopher is depicted with a dog’s head which depicts him carrying Christ in his heart until death, like the donkey that carried Christ to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.
According to the Golden Legend, St. Christopher’s martyrdom took place in Samos, in Lycia. He was tortured, inflicted with iron rods and burning metal, shot with arrows, and later decapacitated.
Significance of St. Christopher Novena
St. Christopher’s feast was celebrated on July 25 as per Latin Church, July 24 as per German Diocese, May 9 as per Eastern Church.
He is not officially recognized by the Church, there was no beatification or canonization being done. St. Christopher Novena is prayed for Christopher’s intercession even today for children and travelers.
St. Christopher is known for his holiness among Christians and is believed to be a cause of many conversions to the faith. St. Christopher’s necklace is used as a symbol of safe travel and protection for travelers and is being worn by mariners for protection and safe passage at sea.
