St. Augustine was a philosopher and a Catholic theologian. He is famous for his contributions to Western philosophy. St. Augustine believed in a hierarchy of being in which God was the Supreme Being above all other beings. St. Augustine is prayed for increasing our devotion to God and preparing ourselves to receive what is asked in prayer.

St. Augustine is known as “The greatest Christian philosopher of Antiquity” and as the saint who exerted the deepest and most lasting influence towards Christianity. He is called St. Augustine, St. Austin, Blessed Augustine, and Doctor of Grace.
Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis in Latin also called Augustine was born on 13 November,354 in Tagaste, a Roman province of Numidia to St. Monica and Patricius.
St. Augustine had a private life before a religious call with Carthage and had a son called Adeodatus meaning “Gift from God” and later left his previous life to become a Catholic priest.
He was inspired to become a Christian after reading the life of Anthony of the Desert. He later wrote a book called Confessions, a classic of Christian theology which is a work of outpouring of thanksgiving and penitence. In 391, Augustine has ordained a priest in Hippo Regius.
He was deeply interested in teaching the different scriptures in the Bible. He became a famous preacher. He preached around 6,000 to 10,000 sermons throughout his life.
In 395, he became the coadjutor Bishop of Hippo and later became full Bishop and was named as “Augustine of Hippo”. He held this position until his death on August 28,430.
Some of his works include “The City of God”, which narrates the biblical story of humankind from Genesis to the Last Judgment, “Ecractationes” meaning Reconsiderations is a book about St. Augustine’s career, “De doctrina Christiana” is an interpretation of Scripture which discusses Augustine’s theory of “signs” and how language represents reality.
“Trinity” is the book that represents the Threeness of God: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, similar to triples in the human soul and quotes the importance of food for meditation and deep reason for optimism for the ultimate human condition.
St. Augustine is admired and remembered for his powerful intellect and for being a stirring orator.

teach us to read history
