Significance of St. Therese Novena
St. Therese of Lisieux also known as Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face was a French Carmelite nun. She is also fondly known as The Little Flower of Jesus.
She is venerated because of her simple approach to devotion and daily duties. She led a very simple and unremarkable life but was later recognized her spiritual development in spite of heavy odds.
Marie-Francoise-Therese Martin was born on January 2, 1873, and baptized two days later. She was the ninth and youngest child of her parents.
Her family was steeped in catholicism and her four elder sisters had also become nuns. Therese entered the Carmel at the age of fifteen. he suffered from various ailments and depression but faced her struggles with a smile.
She wrote about her childhood which was published in October 1898 as a book titled “Histoire d’une âme” (The Story of a Soul). People appreciated and got inspired by her complete devotion to Our Lord and the book became hugely popular.
She died on September 30, 1897, at age 24.
On May 17, 1925, she was canonized by Pope Pius XI at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome with a huge crowd thronging the St. Peter’s Square.
In 1997, St. Therese was designated as a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II. She was the youngest person to have achieved his honor.
In 2015 Therese’s parents, Saints Louis Martin and Marie-Azélie Guérin, were also canonized by Pope Francis I.
She is a patron saint of missions and of florists. Novena to St. Therese the Litlle Flower is popular as she is considered one of the greatest saints of modern times. Her intercessions are highly effective.
