Significance of Novena to Our Lady of Fatima
Our Lady of Fatima is a Catholic title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus. In 1916, three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal had three apparitions of an angel. The angel prayed on the ground and prayed three times.
“Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore Thee profoundly and offer Thee the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference by which He Himself is offended. And, through the infinite merits of His Most Sacred Heart and of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners.“
After that on May 13th, 1917, they had six more apparitions in which they witnessed Blessed Virgin Mary. They described her as a Lady more brilliant than the Sun.
She told them that she has come from Heaven and that they should visit the same six months in succession, on the thirteenth day at this same hour, and thereafter she will reveal her identity on the seventh visit.
On June 13th, on being asked by the children Mary told them that Francisco and Jacinta would go to Heaven but that Lucia would remain on earth longer so that she could promote devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Mary also instructed them to say the Holy Rosary daily in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary for peace and the end of the war. This prayer is known as ‘Fatima Prayer.’
The children were also asked to pray a specific prayer after each decade of the rosary – “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen.“
This is the reason She is also referred to as Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima.
After one month, on July 13th, thousands of people assembled hoping to witness Mary but she was visible only to the three children. She also asked them to keep praying five decades of the Rosary every day and to come every month on the 13th.
She also revealed three secrets to the children. One was a terrifying vision of hell with demons and people in a sea of fire. She also told them about the end of World War 1, the start of another World War, and the consecration of Russia. The third secret was of the Holy Father being killed with bullets and arrows by soldiers at the foot of a cross.
The news of the apparitions spread like a wildfire. On 13th August, the three children were jailed and threatened with death but they were unmoved in their devotion.
On 19th August, there was another Marian apparition in a different place.
On the fifth visit on 13th September, tens of thousands of people (30,000 to 100,000 by various estimates) had gathered. During that visit, Our Lady said, “Continue to say the Rosary to bring about the end of the War.
In October Our Lord will come also, and Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus, to bless the world. . .”
On the sixth visit on 13th October 1917, it rained heavily. The three children saw the three tableaus of the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, then the Holy Family followed by St. Joseph and the Infant Jesus.
After that Lucia saw the Our Lady with Her Son blessing the crowd. Finally, the three shepherd children saw Our Lady of Mount Carmel with the Infant Jesus upon Her knee.
The crowd also witnessed a miracle of the Sun dancing in the sky like a disc and throwing multi-colored rays on them. After this, it appeared that Sun is plunging toward the people before going back to its original position. The crowd also noticed that their previously wet clothes had dried.
This was soon called the “Miracle of the Sun.” This was authenticated by the Vatican as true.
She is also known as the Patron saint of Diocese of Leiria-Fátima.
