St. John Vianney Novena has to be prayed for nine straight days preferably from 27th July to 4th August.
St. Vianney is the patron saint of parish priests. Vianney acquired limited education as a result of the French Revolution. Jean-Baptiste-Marie Vianney, known as John in English, was born at Dardilly, France, on May 8, 1786, and baptized on the same day. He was the fourth of Matthieu and Marie Vianney’s six children.
When St. Benedict Joseph Labre made his journey to Rome, John was nurtured in a Catholic home where his family frequently assisted the impoverished and sheltered him.
When priests were obliged to operate in secrecy or face execution during the anticlerical Terror period of the French Revolution in 1790, Vianney thought they were heroes.
He maintained his faith in priests’ fortitude, and his First Communion catechism education was given to him in secret by two nuns who had lost their convents to the Revolution.
About St. John Vianney
John Vianney had a dream of becoming a priest. He did, however, have to overcome his lack of formal education, which left him unprepared for seminary studies. He had to quit since he couldn’t understand the Latin lectures.
However, his desire to become a priest compelled him to seek private instruction. John was baptized after a long fight with the books.
Situations requiring “impossible” actions followed him around everywhere. As pastor of the Ars parish, John encountered individuals who were unconcerned and content with their way of life. His vision guided him through long fasts and sleepless nights.
He founded La Providence, a shelter for girls, with Catherine Lassagne and Benedicta Lardet. Only a visionary could have such faith in God to provide for all those who came to call La Providence home, both spiritually and materially.
John Vianney’s most notable achievement is his work as a confessor. During the winter, he was supposed to spend 11 to 12 hours a day reconciling people to God.
This duration was extended to 16 hours during the warmer months. A man could not have endured this daily self-giving unless he was completely committed to his vision of a priestly vocation.

Significance of St. John Vianney Novena
In honor of the 150th anniversary of St John Mary Vianney’s death, the Pope established the Year for Priests on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Friday, June 19, 2009, a day usually devoted to prayer for the holiness of priests.
He died on August 4, 1859, and Pope Pius XI designated him the patron saint of parish priests in 1929. His dedication to souls, particularly via the Sacrament of Confession, was unwavering.

Saint John Marie Baptist Vianney you were born of a deeply religious mother; from her you received the Holy Faith; you learned to love God and to pray. At a young age, you were seen kneeling in the front of the statue of Mary. Your soul was supernaturally carried towards the things on High. Despite the high cost, you answered your vocation!
Against many obstacles and contradictions, you had to fight and suffer to become the perfect priest which you were. But your deep spirit of faith supported you in all these battles. 0 Great Saint you know the desire of my soul; I would like to serve God better; from Him I have received so many good things. For this, obtain for me more courage and especially the depth of faith.
Many of my thoughts, words, and actions are useless for my sanctification and for my salvation, because this supernatural spirit does not stir up my life. Help me to be better in the future.

Saint John Marie Baptist Vianney because of your love of God you showed great charity towards your neighbor. You could not preach on the Love of God without burning tears of love.
