St. Ambrose Novena

St. Ambrose Novena has to be done for nine consecutive days any time during the day. This novena is popular among beekeepers and candle makers as he is the patron saint of bees, beekeepers, and candle makers.

St. Ambrose is the Confessor and Doctor of the Church. Ambrose was the teacher who converted and baptized St. Augustine of Hippo, the great Christian theologian.

About St. Ambrose

Saint Ambrose was born around 340 in Tier, Germany, and died around 397 in Milan, Italy. As the Roman Empire collapsed, St. Ambrose was mainly responsible for the rise of Christianity in the West, and he was a fearless and unshakable supporter of the Church’s independence from the state.

The gradual entry of barbarians into the Roman Empire, culminating in specific attacks on the empire’s core and a gradual mixing of the Teutonic invaders with the Greco-Roman society, had a key effect throughout this period. The empire’s capital had shifted from Rome to Constantinople, which was named after the first Christian ruler.

Since the “Life” written after his death by his secretary, Paulinus, at the insistence of St. Augustine, is highly disappointing, the elements for a biography of the Saint are mostly spread among his writings.

Ambrose came from an ancient Roman family that had accepted Christianity at an early age and counted among its scions both Christian martyrs and high-ranking government officials.

His father, also named Ambrosius, was Prefect of Gallia at the time of his birth, and as such ruled the present-day countries of France, Britain, and Spain, as well as Tingitana in Africa.

It was one of the Empire’s four main prefectures, and the greatest office a subject could hold. Trier, Arles, and Lyons, the province’s three major cities, compete for the honor of giving birth to the Saint.

He was the youngest of three children, including a sister, Marcellina, who became a nun, and a brother, Satyrus, who resigned from a prefecture to live with Ambrose and relieve him of temporal burdens after his unexpected elevation to the episcopate.

He devoted all of his property and all of his money to the poor as a bishop. As a result, he became extremely popular and, at times, more powerful politically than the emperor.

Simplician, a Roman presbyter, taught him theology. He studied the Old Testament and Greek literature, combining his new education with his understanding of Greek.

He used all of this while preaching, and Augustine of Hippo, who had previously dismissed Christian preachers, was amazed by his ability and converted to Christianity.

Significance of St. Ambrose Novena

For us, Ambrose symbolizes Christianity’s truly catholic essence. He is a scholar versed in the ancients’ and his contemporaries’ intellect, law, and culture. Despite his active involvement in this world, Ambrose’s life and preaching are marked by the following thought: The underlying meaning of the Scriptures calls our spirit to aspire to another realm. His feast day is December 7, the day he was ordained bishop, according to the Roman calendar.
