Novena to Saints Peter and Paul

Both St. Peter and St. Paul are patron saints of Rome and are respected as prominent pillars of the Catholic Church.

St. Paul is the patron saint of missionaries, evangelists, authors, writers, public workers, tent makers, rope, and saddle makers. St. Peter is the patron saint of fishermen, net makers, shipbuilders, and locksmiths.

Novena to Saints Peter and Paul can be prayed to seek these saints’ intercession for more courage, strength, forgiveness, and an increase of faith in Our Lord.

St. Peter was the first pope and founder of the Roman Church, as well as one of the 12 apostles. He was martyred in Nero’s circus probably about AD 64. He was crucified because he was not a Roman citizen.

According to mythology, he asked to be crucified upside down because he did not believe he was worthy of dying in the same manner as Jesus. He was buried near the Circus at the Vatican Necropolis.

When Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, he chose to construct a church in his memory above the saint’s grave. This church is currently known as St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

About St. Peter and Paul

Peter was a fearless disciple of Jesus. He was the first to acknowledge Jesus as “the Messiah, the Son of the Living God,” and he immediately swore his devotion to him till his death.

The Apostle to the Gentiles was St. Paul. His letters are included in the New Testament literature, and we may learn a lot about his life and the early Church’s faith from them.

Peter was the first pope and the leader of the apostles. Paul was born a jew but he converted to Christianity. They were both imprisoned in Rome’s renowned Mamertine Prison and had predicted their eventual deaths. They were claimed to have been martyred under Emperor Nero’s orders.

Despite the fact that they were executed on the same day, their execution methods would have been different. Saint Peter was crucified, whereas Saint Paul would have been beheaded with a sword because he was a Roman citizen who could be executed more quickly.

St. Paul the Apostle, whose actual name was Saul of Tarsus, was a leader of the first generation of Christians and is frequently regarded as the most important person in the history of Christianity after Jesus and the greatest evangelist.

Significance of Novena to Saints Peter and Paul

The Church commemorates the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul on June 29. The day celebrates the martyrdom of two saints, the two great Apostles, Saint Peter and St. Paul, who were both martyred on the same June day in the year 67, according to traditions.

There is evidence of a long practice of honoring the solemnities of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the same day dating back to the year 258. Through their teaching, ministry, and martyrdom at Rome, the two saints are considered the founders of the See of Rome.

Amen.

O holy Apostles, Peter and Paul, I choose you this day and forever to be my special patrons and advocates;

thee, Saint Peter, Prince of the Apostles, because thou art the Rock, upon which Almighty God hath built His Church;
