About St. Matthew

Saint Matthew was one of Jesus’ 12 apostles and one of the four Evangelists, according to the Bible. He was born in Palestine probably in the first century. Matthew wrote the first Gospel in the New Testament of the Bible, which is today known as the Gospel of Matthew. He worked as a tax collector in Capernaum before preaching the gospel. The patron saint of tax collectors and accountants is Matthew.

Except for the fact that he was the son of Alpheus and was most likely born in Galilee, little is known about St. Matthew. He worked as a tax collector, which was a disliked occupation during Christ’s time. Matthew was working at a collection station in Capernaum, according to the Gospel, when Christ approached him and said, “Follow me.”

Matthew became a disciple of Christ as a result of this simple call. We learn about Christ’s countless deeds and the salvation message He preached to all who came to God through Him from Matthew.

Scholars are certain of the authenticity of Matthew’s Gospel narrative because it tells the same story as the other three Gospel accounts. The first of the New Testament’s four Gospels, his is the first.

Matthew composed his gospel narrative between 41 and 50 AD, many years after Christ’s death. He authored the book in Aramaic in the hopes of persuading his fellow Jews that Jesus was the Messiah and that His kingdom had been spiritually fulfilled.

It was a significant message at a time when practically everyone was anticipating a militant messiah with a sword to return.

Significance of St. Matthew Novena

Matthew, who was apparently wealthy, promptly arranged a meal for Jesus at his home, which was attended by many of his colleagues and other “sinners” (most likely non-observant Jews), as well as an unknown number of Jesus’ disciples. Matthew invited Jesus to a feast after his call.

When the Scribes and Pharisees saw this, they condemned Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners. “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance,” Jesus responded.

Prayer to St. Matthew

Dear Saint Matthew, in your Gospel you portray Jesus as the longed-for Messiah who fulfilled the Prophets of the Old Covenant and as the new Lawgiver who founded the Church of the New Covenant.

Obtain for us the grace to see Jesus living in His Church and to follow His teachings in our lives on earth, so that we may live forever with Him in heaven.
