About St. Dominic

St. Dominic is also known Dominic of Osma, Dominic of Caleruega or Dominic de Guzmán.

Dominic was born after 1170 in Caleruega, Castile, Spain. He was first schooled by a priest relative before being moved to Palencia to study arts and theology.

Dominic used the proceeds from his book sales to help victims of local famine. He then joined the regular canons of Osma chapter, which was led by Diego de Acebes.

He left the cloister in 1203 or 1204 to accompany Diego, who had already become a bishop, on a diplomatic journey to Northern Europe.

He found the Albigensian heresy while traversing the Toulouse region, which then plagued the South of France. Dominic developed a missionary passion to make Christ known to the pagans.

Before he was born, his mother had a vision of a dog with a burning torch in its jaws emerging from her womb and setting the world on fire. Later, she noticed the moon on his forehead, but his godmother mistook it for a star at his Baptism. The boy was named after Saint Dominic of Silos, whose local shrine was one of his mother’s favourites. His mother was named Blessed Joan of Aza.

Dominic received his education in Palencia, where he focused on theology and the arts. He studied theology for six years and the arts for four. His lecturers unanimously praised him as a model student.

A famine struck Spain in 1191, leaving many people destitute and homeless. Dominic sold everything he owned, including his furniture and clothing, and used the proceeds to help the underprivileged.

Dominic joined the Canons Regular, a Benedictine order at Osma, in 1194. In the year 1201, he became the chapter’s superior, or prior.

In 1203 he travelled to Denmark with his bishop, Diego de Acebo. His purpose was to assist Crown Prince Ferdinand in finding a bride.

Despite the fact that an agreement had been reached, the princess died before she could travel to Spain. Her tragic death freed the two to go anywhere they pleased. They decided to journey to Rome, arriving in late 1204.

Bishop Diego de Acebo sought to resign his position in order to pursue a new mission, which included the conversion of unbelievers.

Dominic was given permission to establish his own religious order for this purpose in July 1215. Six people accompanied him. The community adhered to a rigid Rule of Life that included prayer and penance as well as a strict regimen of discipline. They also set up an educational system. They preached frequently across the countryside.

Day 1

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Intro Prayer

O renowned champion of the faith of Christ,
most holy saint Dominic,
who didst renounce the honour and dignity
of an earthly principality to embrace the poor,
laborious, and mortified life
which should distinguish a disciple of Him Who has said:
“If any man will come after Me,
let him take up his cross and follow Me.”

O burning torch,
who being thyself consumed with the fire of divine love,
didst incessantly labour
to enkindle that sacred flame
in the hearts of others,
look down upon me from that throne of glory
where thou enjoyest the reward of all thy labours,
and obtain that some sparks of that blessed fire
may be lighted in my soul,
to animate and encourage me under any crosses or trials
with which it shall please the divine goodness to visit me.

Thou, O great Saint,
regardest as nothing all the afflictions thou didst endure,
and all the toils thou didst undergo
for the promotion of God’s holy cause;
obtain, I beseech Thee, that the same
ardent love which strengthened thee,
may make sweet to me labours, humiliations, disgraces,
or whatever other mortifications

I may have to suffer for the Name of Jesus.

May I ever bear in mind that nothing can happen to me
but by the particular dispensation of a God
Who is infinitely wise,
and therefore knows what is best for my welfare;
infinitely powerful,
and consequently able to effect it;
and above all,
infinitely merciful and loving,
Who has laid down His life for my redemption,
and continues daily to give new proofs of His love and bounty.

Concluding Prayer

O tender Father of the poor who,
when all other resources were exhausted,
didst offer thyself for their relief,
obtain for me that true spirit of compassion
for the suffering members of Jesus Christ,
which shone forth so conspicuously in thy holy life.

May I, by charity to those whom Jesus so dearly loves,

lay up for myself treasures in heaven,
where thou now enjoyest that which the eye hath not seen,
nor the ear heard,
nor the heart of man conceived,
but which God has prepared for those who love Him,
and who prove themselves His Disciples
by the observance of His Divine precept: love one another.

I praise and thank God for the high degree of sanctity

to which He had raised thee,
and the special privileges
by which He has distinguished thee.

I ask thee,

by that gratitude with which thou shalt for all eternity
be penetrated for thy Divine Benefactor,
implore for me the grace to root out of my heart
whatever is not agreeable in His sight,
especially that evil habit
by which I most frequently offend Him.

Obtain likewise the favours I request in this Novena, through thy powerful intercession.

<<mention your special request>>

O glorious Mother of God,
Queen of the most sacred Rosary,
thou who didst love Dominic with the affection of a mother,
and were most tenderly loved and honoured by him,
look upon me, for his sake,
with an eye of pity, deign to join with him in presenting these petitions
to thy most Blessed Jesus.

I sincerely desire from this moment to love Him with all my heart,
and serve Him with all my strength,
and now place myself under thy powerful protection,
as a sure means of obtaining all the graces necessary
to serve Him faithfully here,
that I may eternally rejoice with Him hereafter.

Amen

infinitely merciful and loving,
Who has laid down His life for my redemption,
and continues daily to give new proofs of His love and bounty.

Concluding Prayer

O tender Father of the poor who,
when all other resources were exhausted,
didst offer thyself for their relief,
obtain for me that true spirit of compassion
for the suffering members of Jesus Christ,
which shone forth so conspicuously in thy holy life.

May I, by charity to those whom Jesus so dearly loves,

lay up for myself treasures in heaven,
where thou now enjoyest that which the eye hath not seen,
nor the ear heard,
nor the heart of man conceived,
but which God has prepared for those who love Him,
and who prove themselves His Disciples
by the observance of His Divine precept: love one another.

I praise and thank God for the high degree of sanctity

to which He had raised thee,
and the special privileges
by which He has distinguished thee.

I ask thee,

by that gratitude with which thou shalt for all eternity
be penetrated for thy Divine Benefactor,
implore for me the grace to root out of my heart
whatever is not agreeable in His sight,
especially that evil habit
by which I most frequently offend Him.

Obtain likewise the favours I request in this Novena, through thy powerful intercession.

<<mention your special request>>

O glorious Mother of God,
Queen of the most sacred Rosary,
thou who didst love Dominic with the affection of a mother,
and were most tenderly loved and honoured by him,
look upon me, for his sake,
with an eye of pity, deign to join with him in presenting these petitions
to thy most Blessed Jesus.

I sincerely desire from this moment to love Him with all my heart,
and serve Him with all my strength,
and now place myself under thy powerful protection,
as a sure means of obtaining all the graces necessary
to serve Him faithfully here,
that I may eternally rejoice with Him hereafter.

Amen

Day 9

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Intro Prayer

O renowned champion of the faith of Christ,
most holy saint Dominic,
who didst renounce the honour and dignity
of an earthly principality to embrace the poor,
laborious, and mortified life
which should distinguish a disciple of Him Who has said:
“If any man will come after Me,
let him take up his cross and follow Me.”

O burning torch,
who being thyself consumed with the fire of divine love,
didst incessantly labour
to enkindle that sacred flame
in the hearts of others,
look down upon me from that throne of glory
where thou enjoyest the reward of all thy labours,
and obtain that some sparks of that blessed fire
may be lighted in my soul,
to animate and encourage me under any crosses or trials
with which it shall please the divine goodness to visit me.

Thou, O great Saint,
regardest as nothing all the afflictions thou didst endure,
and all the toils thou didst undergo
for the promotion of God’s holy cause;
obtain, I beseech Thee, that the same
ardent love which strengthened thee,
may make sweet to me labours, humiliations, disgraces,
or whatever other mortifications

I may have to suffer for the Name of Jesus.

May I ever bear in mind that nothing can happen to me
but by the particular dispensation of a God
Who is infinitely wise,
and therefore knows what is best for my welfare;
infinitely powerful,
and consequently able to effect it;
and above all,
infinitely merciful and loving,
Who has laid down His life for my redemption,
and continues daily to give new proofs of His love and bounty.

God has given me the gift to read the signs, interpret the dreams, decode the angel numbers since birth. Through rigorous practice and application, my gifts have been fine-tuned. Now, I use my gifts solely to help those distressed souls who have lost all hopes, those who have been left alone to fend for themselves, those whom the system doesn’t care anymore, those whom the mainstream science has ignored.
