Father Michael McGivney Novena Prayer

Father Michael McGivney novena can be prayed to seek intercession from him on your behalf if you are a knight of Columbus.

Michael Joseph McGivney was a New Haven, Connecticut-based Irish-American Catholic priest. At a nearby parish, he formed the Knights of Columbus to serve as mutual help and fraternal insurance group, especially for immigrants and their families.

It grew to become the world’s greatest Catholic fraternal organization during the twentieth century.

About Father Michael McGivney

McGivney left Waterbury at the age of 16 for Quebec, where he enrolled in the College of St. Hyacinthe’s seminary. He completed his education at Niagara Falls’ Our Lady of Angels Seminary (now Niagara University) and Montreal’s St. Mary’s Seminary.

When Michael’s father, Patrick McGivney, died in 1873, he had to abandon his priesthood studies in order to assist maintain his family. Fortunately, Bishop Francis McFarland of Hartford assisted the family financially and helped McGivney secure admission at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore.

Over a century ago, in mid-August of 1890, one of the largest funerals in the history of Waterbury, Connecticut took place. The crowds were mourning the death of Father Michael J. McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus, who died at the age of 38.

Patrick and Mary (Lynch) McGivney, his parents, had immigrated to the United States during the great Irish immigration surge of the nineteenth century.

The Knights of Columbus, whose founder, Father Michael McGivney, was beatified on Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, Conn., is perhaps one of the most noteworthy examples of a local solution to a local problem becoming an international movement.

It’s critical to comprehend how Blessed McGivney’s solution to a local need established the groundwork for millions of people around the world to engage in service and charity during the previous 138 years.

He made a tremendous impact on his community as a parish priest in the gritty New England manufacturing town of New Haven, garnering the respect of the Protestant establishment and the love of his parishioners at St. Mary’s Church.

Fr. McGivney was inspired to help families whose breadwinner had died, so he formed the Knights of Columbus, a mutual benefit society that currently has 1.8 million members in 13 countries and is the world’s largest Catholic lay organization.

Father Michael McGivney recalls the victories and struggles of a priest who may very likely be America’s first canonized parish priest, from defending the persecuted Church to helping widows and orphans.

Thousands of people who recognized him as the creator of the Knights of Columbus owed him their allegiance and affection because of his Christian inspiration, leadership, and administrative determination.

Now, I use my gifts solely to help those distressed souls who have lost all hopes, those who have been left alone to fend for themselves, those whom the system doesn’t care anymore, those whom the mainstream science has ignored.
