About St. Charles Borromeo
On October 2, 1538, at the castle of Arona on Lake Maggiore near Milan, Saint Charles Borromeo was born. His father was the Count of Arona, while his mother was a Medici family member. He was the third of the couple’s six children.
He was the second son of wealthy and prominent parents who nurtured him in a strict religious environment. He was given tonsure, or hair cutting on the top of the head when he was twelve years old. This qualified him for the priesthood, and he was educated accordingly.
Because of the circumstances surrounding Charles’ birth in 1538, he may easily have joined the ranks of the corrupt Renaissance clergy. He was born into wealth as the son of noble parents, with a fixed income equivalent to today’s “trust funds.”
The young man, on the other hand, made it clear from the start that he wanted to go against the grain. He expressed his sincere desire to serve the Church by urging his father to donate the majority of the fund’s funds to the poor.
Despite his Milanese aristocracy and ties to the powerful Medici family, Charles intended to devote his life to the Church. Charles was designated cardinal-deacon and administrator of the Archdiocese of Milan by his uncle, Cardinal de Medici, when he was elected Pope Pius IV in 1559. Charles was still a layman and a student at the time.
Charles was entrusted with numerous significant jobs linked with the Vatican as a result of his intellectual qualities, and he was eventually made secretary of state with authority for the papal states.
Despite his families’ insistence that he marry, Charles made the decision to become a priest after the sudden death of his elder brother. Borromeo was consecrated bishop of Milan shortly after being ordained a priest at the age of 25.
After his father died in 1554, Charles was left in charge of his household, despite the fact that he was still an adolescent. Charles went on to get a doctorate in canon and civil law after continuing his studies.
He died on November 3, 1584, at an age of 46 after falling sick.
Charles Borromeo was beatified on May 12, 1602, by Pope Paul V, and was canonized by Paul V on November 1, 1610.

O glorious St. Charles,
the father of the clergy,
and the perfect model of holy prelates!
You are that good pastor, who,
like your divine Master,
gave up your life for your flock,
if not by death,
at least by the numerous sacrifices
of your painful mission.
Your sanctified life on earth
was a spur to the most fervent,
your exemplary penance was a reproach to the slothful,
and your untiring zeal was the support of the Church.
O great Prelate,
since the glory of God
and the salvation of souls
are the only objects of solicitude
to the blessed in heaven,
vouchsafe to intercede for me now,
and to offer up for the intention of this novena,
those fervent prayers
which were so successful while you were on earth.

Prayer of St. Charles Borromeo
Almighty God, you have generously made known to human beings the mysteries of your life through Jesus Christ your Son in the Holy Spirit.
Enlighten my mind to know these mysteries which your Church treasures and teaches.
Move my heart to love them and my will to live in accord with them.
Give me the ability to teach this Faith to others without pride, without ostentation, and without personal gain.
Let me realize that I am simply your instrument for bringing others to the knowledge of the wonderful things you have done for all your creatures.
Help me to be faithful to this task that you have entrusted to me.
