St. Clare was an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Francis of Assisi. St. Clare was well known for laying the foundation of The Order of Poor Ladies, which was later named Poor Clares.
She is the first woman in the history of the church to pen down her own rules or guidelines for the religious life of her order. She is a huge role model for her teachings on life values. St. Clare lived a life of poverty while serving God.
She is the patron saint of televisions, computer screens, eye disease, goldsmiths, and laundry.
Chiara Offreduccio also called Clara, Clair, Clare; Sinclair was born on 16 July 1194 in Assisi to Favorino Sciffi and Ortolana.
Clare was devoted to prayer from a very young age and as a teen she heard St. Francis’s preachings and wanted to dedicate her life to the manner of the Gospel.
St. Francis helped Clare to receive her vows, and thus she joined the Second Order of St. Francis and founded the Poor Clares of San Damiano, near Assisi.
Clare became the abbess of the foundation. The order was later named the Order of Saint Clare. Clare was hugely devoted and dedicated to Francis and was referred as “alter Franciscus,” or Francis.
Clare’s own rules and guidelines were made to serve as the governing rule for Clare’s Order of Poor Ladies. Clare died at 59-years-old and her remains were placed in the chapel of San Giorgio and were canonized as Saint Clare of Assisi.
St. Clare is pictured carrying a monstrance or pyx. St. Clare worked to promote the growth of her order until her death and today the Order of Saint Clare numbers more than 20,000 sisters worldwide in 70 countries represented.

Significance of St. Clare Novena
St. Clare’s feast day is celebrated on August 11. A tradition of bringing offerings of eggs to the Poor Clares for good weather, particularly for weddings is done in prayer to St. Clare. This tradition is popularly followed in the Philippines, Obando, and Bulacan.
In Castilian Clara refers to an interval of clear weather, and in Spanish, it also refers to the white or albumen of the egg and hence is given as an offering.
Many places, including churches, convents, schools, hospitals, towns, and countries are named after Saint Clare. St. Clare of Assisi is remembered and celebrated on August 11 in the Church of England.
