Significance of Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is devoted to the physical heart of Jesus Christ. The Sacred Heart is considered as a symbol of boundless love and compassion of Jesus that conquers all sins.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is often shown as the pierced heart of Jesus. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is devotion to Christ Himself.
The beginnings of the devotion are found in the fathers of the Church, including Origen, Saint Ambrose, Saint Jerome, Saint Augustine of Hippo, Saint Hippolytus of Rome, Saint Irenaeus, Saint Justin Martyr, and Saint Cyprian.
It was popularised by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque a Roman Catholic nun from France in the 1670s who claimed that she learned it during various visions she had of Our Lord. In 1856, the devotion was added to the church calendar by Pope Pius IX.
The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is a celebration that falls 19 days after Pentecost, on a Friday.
