St. Brigid Novena is popular in Ireland and also among dairy and poultry farmers across Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
St. Brigid of Ireland is also known as St. Brigid of Kildare. She is the patron saint of Ireland, dairy workers, midwives, newborn babies, farmers, ranchers, milkmaids, poultry farmers, and beer.
Around the year 450, St. Brigid was born in Faughart, Ireland. Brioicsech, her mother, was a Portuguese Christian slave who had been kidnapped and sold into slavery in Ireland. St. Brigid worked on her father’s farm, herding livestock and sheep, and her father, Dubhthach, was a pagan chieftain.
Brigid is also supposed to have miraculously transformed water into beer for a leper colony and provided enough beer for 18 churches from a single barrel, earning her the title of the patron saint of beer.
About St. Brigid
Brocca was sold to a Druid landowner after Dubthach’s wife found she was pregnant. It’s unclear if Brocca was unable to give milk or was not available to care for Brigid, but tradition has it that because the druid was impure, Brigid vomited any meal the druid tried to feed her, so she was maintained nourished by a white cow with red ears.
Despite the fact that she was a slave, St. Brigid was noted for her incredible kindness. There are other miracle stories of her kindness that have been passed down through the generations. When she churned butter, it is reported that she would give a considerable amount to the destitute, but the butter would miraculously refill.
“Christ is in the person of every poor person who believes,” St. Brigid is said to have said when asked why she supported the needy. “I find it difficult to deny Christ His own food,” she continued.
St. Brigid of Ireland (not to be confused with St. Bridget of Sweden) was noted for her exceptional spirituality as well as her compassion and charity for others throughout her life.
Despite her odd upbringing, she was a contemporary of St. Patrick, and her commitment to God and desire to serve His will was noted from an early age. Her example of sensitivity and love for the impoverished and downtrodden in Ireland inspired many people to carry out acts of mercy even today.
