About Pier Georgio Frassati
Of Georgia Frassati Pope St John Paul ll said, “I, too, in my youth, felt the beneficial influence of his example and, as a student, I was impressed by the force of his Christian testimony.”
Blessed Pier Georgio Frassati was born in an influential Italian family on 6th April 1901. His father Alfredo Frassati and his mother Adélaïde Ametis.
Interestingly, his father was religious agnostic and was involved in Italian politics, he even served in the Italian Senate. His son never held any position of power when it comes to politics but Georgio Frassati definitely had strong political opinions.
Georgio Frassati was often heard saying, “ Charity is not enough, we need social reform. “ He is known and celebrated because he dedicated his short life to the upliftment of the poor following the path of Christ.
His urge and inclination to serve and help the poor started in his childhood. He would sob if anybody left their home without receiving help. He was, therefore, engaged with various charitable organizations such as Catholic Action and the St Vincent de Paul Society.
He expressed his faith through regular worship and devotion, through charitable service to the poor, by taking care of the sick. He was a zealous young man who advocated for social justice for those who are marginalized and he advocated for equality. He practiced in his personal life devoted to his family, loyalty to his friends and community, and in this way too he honored his faith.
Aside from his faith and zeal for social justice, he was keenly passionate about mountaineering which reveals his athletic nature. He would usually go on mountaineering trips with his close group of friends and he dearly cherished these trips both because of the company and his love for mountains and mountaineering.
An interestingly notable thing about him is that his religion seeped into every aspect of his life and mountaineering was no exception. On these trips, he discussed religion with his friends, they also devoted time to prayer.
He was against Fascism and the rule of Mussolini in Italy and he was vocal about it. He was arrested as he participated in a demonstration against Mussolini with Catholic Workers’ Association.
He was inspired by the teachings of Thomas Aquinas, Catherine of Siena, Paul the Apostle.
His life was cut tragically short at the age of 24 in 1925. He was declared “blessed” by Pope John Paul ll in 1990, who also declared him the patron for World Youth Day.
