About Mary Star of the Sea
Star of the Sea is a title bestowed upon Mother Mary or Virgin Mary. The title has been in use since the medieval period. How this title came to be associated with the Mother is an interesting story. The English translation of the title is taken from Latin Stella Maris.
If we dig deeper into the etymology and history of the term, we find out that Mother Mary’s Hebrew name was Miryam which meant drop of the sea. In a mistranslation, it was made into Stella Maris in Latin.
This title, however, has been given an allegorical meaning of Mother Mary being our “guiding star” on humanity’s way back to Christ.
In this context, it is interesting to note that in the middle ages the North Star was known as Stella Maris. It is general history that the North star has been a trusted guide of the sailors since time immemorial.
Due to this history and meaning of the title, Mary Star of the Sea has become a huge devotional figure within many coastal communities, sailors and churches, and parishes in the coastal regions.
They believe just as Mother Mary was Jesus Christ’s mother, guide, and companion in his incarnation on Earth, she is their Mother and guide too in this human existence and beyond.
Often this human life is compared to a tumultuous journey on the sea and in this respect, Mary the Star of the Sea, like every present and steady North Star will guide them to the eternal shore of existence.

Star of the Sea title of Mother Mary is given the honor in the Catholic hymns Hail Queen of Heaven, the Ocean Star, and Ave Maris Stella.
