Our Lady of Knock Novena is a highly emotional and effective prayer for all your problems. She is the patron saint of Ireland.
About Our Lady of Knock Novena
21st August 1879 was like another day of the year albeit wet. However what Mary Byrne witnessed the evening of that fateful day would change the history of her village knock of County Mayo, Ireland forever.
Mary along with at least fourteen other official witnesses saw a holy apparition on the gable wall of their church. According to records, the apparition remained for almost two hours.
The holy apparition was that of the Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Joseph, and Saint John the Evangelist. What was unique to the knock apparition was the presence of a Lamb along with a cross and angels.
After this sighting, this parish has been made a Catholic pilgrimage site. What is popularly known as Knock Shrine is also the National Shrine of Ireland.
At around 8 o’clock on 21st August 1879, Mary Byrne was returning home with the priest’s housekeeper Mary McLoughlin when they were stopped short in their way by a site like no other.
She ran home to inform the others and soon as many as twenty-five people from the village of knock witnessed what they called a very life-like presence of the Virgin Mother who was floating a few feet above the ground.
She was said to be wearing a white cloak and seemed to be deep in prayer with her eyes towards the heavens. St Joseph appeared to be standing on the right side of Mary, wearing white robes.
St. John the Evangelist stood on the left side of the Mother and some claimed he appeared to be preaching with a book in his hand. A little behind them was an altar with a lamb on it and a cross on the altar.
There is also an account of a farmer about half a mile away who claimed to see what he described as the globe of golden light surrounding the gable.
Following this incident, a Commission of Enquiry was set by Archbishop John McHale of Tuam on 8 October 1879. The principal investigators of the commission were Archdeacon Bartholemew Cavanagh – P.P. Knock, Canon James Waldron – P. P. Ballyhaunis, and Canon Ulick Bourke – P. P. Clare Morris.
At the conclusion of the inquiry which lasted several weeks, the commission submitted a positive report satisfied with the testimony of the witnesses.
The first organized pilgrimage to this shrine happened in 1880. Since then it has been a popular site among devotees.
