Significance of St. Dymphna Novena

St. Dymphna Novena is highly effective for those who suffer from mental afflictions. She is a very popular saint as millions of people seeking her intercession in prayer have experienced miraculous healing from mental health problems.

St. Dymphna is the patroness of those suffering nervous and mental afflictions like epilepsy, anxiety, those who have lost their parents, incest victims, rape and abuse victims. She is also the patron saint of mental health professionals.

St. Dymphna’s feast day is traditionally celebrated on May 15 but you can pray through her intercession any time.

Saint Dymphna was an Irish princess during the 7th century. Her father was a pagan king while the mother was a devout Christian. When she was only fourteen she secretly baptized and took a vow of chastity. After her mother’s death, his father wanted to marry his own daughter.

Dymphna ran away to Gheel along with Father Gerebern to escape from her father’s evil intentions. Eventually, she was found out by the King. He again tried to coax her into marrying him but she didn’t waver. Dymphna refused to compromise her chastity.

Finally, the King ordered his soldiers to execute Father Gerebern and the princess. While the soldiers killed Father Gerebern, they could not harm Dymphna.

Then the king took upon himself and cut off his daughter’s head with a sword. Dymphna was only fifteen years old at that time.

Both Dymphna and Father Gerebran were named saints and Dymphna was honored with the crown of martyrdom in the year 620.
