About Holy Family
The Holy Family consists of Child Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph. The Holy Family was venerated by Saint François de Laval, the first bishop of New France in the 17th century.
The Holy Family symbolizes the holy Christian life and leads us on the path of living our lives in obedience and respect to our family, like how Jesus lived in obedience with his parents. The Holy Family stands as exemplary to all Christian Families.
The Holy Bible talks about the Holy Family during Jesus’s birth and during the time before his ministry. The holy gospels of Luke and John narrate Jesus’s life and talk much about his time spent with his family.
The Holy Family is depicted in the most famous forms of art such as the Italian Renaissance painting and Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting.
The Holy Family represented through art depicts the parenting, early life, and the time of Nativity of Jesus. Other variants of the Holy Family are often portrayed showing only Mother Mary and Jesus along with Mother Mary’s mother St. Anne and without Jesus’s foster father St. Joseph.
In form of art, it is seen as St. Anne holding both Virgin and Child on her lap and the Child seated on the ground between the two women signifying that Mother Mary was from the first instant of her conception by her mother, free from original sin.
Jesus’s older cousin, Saint John the Baptist, and his mother Saint Elizabeth also features in the representation of the Holy Family and also the extended family of Jesus called the Holy Kinship; which includes about twenty figures.
The original version though only includes Mother Mary, Jesus, and St. Joseph which illustrates the Counter-Reformation concept of the “terrestrial trinity,” meaning that St. Joseph, Jesus, and Mother Mary are the earthly reflection of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The Holy Family is also depicted as “two trinities”- combining both groups, earthly and celestial as one Holy Family.

Significance of Holy Family Novena
The Feast of the Holy Family is celebrated in the Catholic Church, as well as in the Lutheran and Anglican churches. The feast is observed since 1921 and was inserted in the Liturgical calendar by Pope Benedict XV.
The Feast falls within the season of Christmas tide and it is held on the Sunday between Christmas Day and January 1st or on December 30th. The feast symbolizes the Holy Family’s life together, and the celebration focuses on religious family life.

The Holy Family Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, being subject to Mary and Joseph, You sanctified family life by Your beautiful virtues. Grant that we, with the help of Mary and Joseph, may be taught by the example of Your holy Family, and may after death enjoy its everlasting companionship.
Lord Jesus, help us ever to follow the example of Your holy Family, that in the hour of our death Your glorious Virgin Mother together with Saint Joseph may come to meet us, and we may be worthy to be received by You into the everlasting joys of heaven. You live and reign forever.
