Christ the King Novena

Feast of Christ the King is also called the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Feast of King of the Universe, and Christ the King Sunday of Reign of Christ and is celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church in honor of Jesus Christ. It was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925.

The feast is also celebrated by the Lutheran, Anglican, Moravian, Methodist, Reformed, and United Protestant churches. The Feast of Christ the King refers to the end of times where Jesus will reign throughout the ends of the world.

The title of the feast originated from the Latin word “Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Regis” (Our Lord Jesus Christ the King) and is celebrated on the “the last Sunday of the month of October.

In 1969, the celebration was moved from the last Sunday in October to the Sunday before Advent.

Facts about Christ the King

Pope Pius XI who introduced this feast that celebrates the kingship of Christ put forth three effects: The nations would see that the Church has the right to freedom, and immunity from the state. The leaders and nations would see that they are bound to give respect to Christ.

The faithful would gain strength and courage from the celebration of the feast and are reminded that Christ must reign in our hearts, minds, wills, and bodies. The Catholic Liturgical Church assumes the feast as a gift to the religious and sends the message to live life with God.

The Church celebrates the Mystical Body of the Risen Christ meaning that the body is inseparable and Jesus Christ is alive, has been raised, and continues his redemptive mission to the Church and the Church accepts that Jesus Christ is the One who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

The Church through this feast teaches us that Jesus Christ is King and we are the seeds of His Kingdom scattered in the garden of a world which is waiting to be born anew and invites us to live with Christ in order to help us walk into a deeper encounter with the Lord and bring the whole world with us into the new world of the Church.

Significance of Christ the King Novena

The feast tells us about how Jesus Christ is meant to be the Lord of our lives and informs us the very pattern of how we live them and to be drawn to the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End – Jesus Christ and learn that the emptiness of life without God fails to fulfill the longing in their own hearts.
