St. Dwynwen Novena

St. Dwynwen Novena is prayed when you need her intercession for your lost love and reconciliation with your lover.

St. Dwynwen also known as Dwyn, Donwen, Donwenna, Dunwen, and Dwyn is the Welsh patron saint of lovers, broken-hearted people, broken hearts and the patron saint of sick animals.

St. Dwynwen does not have a clear history but legend says she was the most beautiful daughter of King Brychan Brycheiniog and Rigrawst of the 5th century. 

As a young woman, Dwynwen fell in love with a young prince named Maelon Dafodrill, but her love is rejected by her father who had fixed her marriage with another alliance.

St. Dwynwen prays in vain that she forgets her love for Prince Maelon in order to marry according to her father’s wish and her prayer is answered after an angel offers her a potion granting her three wishes.

St. Dwynwen wishes that Prince Maelon be thawed and that God looks after all the true lovers; and that she remain unmarried and later dedicates her life to God.

St. Dwynwen established a convent in Llanddwyn and now is recognized as her pilgrimage. St. Dwynwen also built a Church in Anglesey known as Llanddwyn, meaning “Church of Dwynwen“.

St. Dwynwen served her life to God and died around 465AD.

St. Dwynwen’s life is presented in the writings of Edward Williams also known as Iolo Morganwg and is also mentioned in the early genealogies as one of the saintly daughters of the fifth-century king, Brychan Brycheiniog.

Significance of St. Dwynwen Novena

St. Dwynwen’s Feast is celebrated on January 25. Her remains are buried in St. Dwynwen’s Church on Ynys Llanddwyn. Under the rule of Queen Victoria, a plain cross of about fourteen feet was erected in memory of St. Dwynwen in Anglican Church,1879.

A Celtic cross was erected near the ruins of the church built for honoring F. G. Wynn of Glynllivon, in 1903 also remembering the great patroness St. Dwynwen, which now stands as a site of a nature reserve.

The Catholic Calendar marks the 25 of January as the day of ‘Dwinwent’ or ‘Damwent’ honoring St. Dwynwen. This day is celebrated like Valentine’s Day in Wales where people exchange cards, have special meals, spend time and celebrate together with their lovers, and greetings are done in  Welsh as – ‘Dwi’n dy garu di’ meaning ‘I love you’, on this special day.
