St. Charbel Novena

Saint Charbel Makhlouf or Sharbel Maklouf was a Maronite monk and is known as the “Miracle Monk of Lebanon”. He performed various miraculous healings and is praised for his ability to unite Christians and Muslims.

Yussef Antoun Makhlouf was born in Lebanon,1828 to Antoun Zaarour Makhlouf and Brigitta Elias al-Shediyaq. Yussef attended the parish school and engaged in prayer and solitude from a very early age and left home in 1951 to continue his religious life and became “Brother Charbel,” a solitary monk at the Hermitage of Saint Paul in the Qadisha Valley, Lebanon.

He took his vows in November 1853 as a monk and later studied priesthood, ordained, and sent to serve in the Monastery of St. Maron.

He served as a priest-monk for 19 years and showed great devotion to prayer, work, and silence. God’s “supernatural power” worked on St. Charbel and was observed through his works and he became a wonder-worker for both the Christians and Muslims.

For the next 23 years, he had developed an unending love and profound union towards God and later died of health issues on December 25, 1898.

The healing of Sister Mary Abel Kamari of the Sacred Hearts, The healing of Iskandar Naim Obeid from Baabdat, and The healing of Mariam Awad from Hammana are considered the greatest healings and miracles of St. Charbel during his period of canonization and beatification.

Significance of St. Charbel Novena

St. Charbel’s Feast is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of July according to Maronite Calendar and 24th July according to the Roman Calendar. He was canonized in 1977 and is named as the “admirable flower of sanctity blooming on the stem of the ancient monastic traditions of the East.”

His major shrine is the Monastery of Saint Maron Annaya, Byblos District, Lebanon. The Shrine of St. Charbel is composed of the Monastery of St. Maron where St. Charbel lived through his religious life.
