About Our Lady of Mount Carmel

The Blessed Virgin Mary is known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, or Virgin of Carmel since she is the patroness of the Carmelite Order.

During the late 12th and early to mid-13th centuries, the first Carmelites were Christian hermits residing on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. They built a chapel in the center of their hermitages, dedicating it to the Blessed Virgin, whom they referred to as the “Lady of the Place” in chivalric terminology. In the nineteenth century, Our Lady of Mount Carmel was designated as Chile’s patron saint.

The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, commonly known as the Brown Scapular, has been the focus of popular devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel since the 15th century. Mary is claimed to have given the Scapular to an early Carmelite named Saint Simon Stock, according to legend (1165-1265).

In the Crusader States, the Carmelite Order was the only religious order founded. Some of its inhabitants traveled west to England in the 13th century, establishing a chapter and being attested there around 1241–1242.

Saint Simon Stock, an early English prior general of the Carmelite Order shortly after its migration to England, had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in which she handed him the Brown Scapular, according to a tradition dating back to the late 14th century.

After 1287, this became a part of the Carmelite way of life. Mary promised in Stock’s vision that anyone who died wearing the scapular would be saved.

This is a devotional sacramental that denotes the wearer’s consecration to Mary and Carmelite connection. It is a symbol of her unique protection and a call to devote oneself to her in a specific way.

Fr. John Cheron, a Carmelite, released a paper in 1642 that he said was a 13th-century letter written by Saint Simon Stock’s secretary, Peter Swanington. Historians have known since the early twentieth century that this document was falsified, most likely by Cheron himself.
