The Annunciation Novena

Lady Day is the traditional name for the Feast of the Annunciation, which is celebrated on March 25 and celebrates the visit of the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during which he informed her that she would be the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in the Western liturgical year.

The event being commemorated is referred to as “The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary” in Edward VI’s 1549 Prayer Book and the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, but it is more accurately referred to as “The Annunciation of our Lord to the Blessed Virgin Mary” in the modern Church of England Calendar.

The first of four traditional English quarter days is today. The Virgin Mary is “Our Lady.” The phrase dates back to Middle English when certain nouns lost their genitive inflections.

“Lady” was then given as a genitive ending, so the name translates “Our Lady’s Day.” The archangel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that she will give birth to Christ is commemorated on this day.

The Annunciation Feast is celebrated virtually globally in Christianity, particularly among Orthodoxy, Anglicanism, Catholicism, and Lutheranism. It is a major Marian feast in the Catholic Church, a Festival in Lutheran Churches, and a Principal Feast in the Anglican Communion.

Because it heralds the incarnation of Christ, it is recognized as one of the eight major feasts of the Lord in Orthodox Christianity, rather than one of the four great Marian feasts, despite the fact that several prominent components of its liturgical observance are Marian.

The Angelus prayer and, especially in Roman Catholicism, the event’s position as the first Joyful Mystery of the Dominican Rosary are two instances of the prominence attributed to the Annunciation in liturgical Christianity.

The Annunciation Feast was first observed in the fourth or fifth centuries. The feast was first mentioned in a canon of the Council of Toledo in 656, where it was described as being celebrated throughout the Church, and again in a canon of the Council of Constantinople “in Trullo” in 692, which forbade the celebration of any festivals during Lent, with the exception of the Lord’s Day (Sunday) and the Feast of the Annunciation.

In 1240, the Synod of Worcester, England, prohibited all servile employment on the feast. Many Church Fathers, including St. Athanasius, St. Gregory of Nyssa, and St. Augustine, have written on this feast, which commemorates the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Trinity.
