About St. Gerard Majella
St. Gerard was an Italian lay brother of the Congregation of the Redeemer, also called a Redemptorist, and is honored by the Catholic Church.
He is the patron saint for children, unborn children, women in childbirth, mothers, expectant mothers, motherhood, the falsely accused, good confessions, lay brothers, and Muro Lucano, Italy.
St. Gerard Majella was born in April 6,1726 in Muro, Italy to Dominic Majella and Benadetta Majella.
He grew up in poverty and was forced to work to support the family’s financial needs.
He grew up becoming a tailor and worked as a sewing apprentice under the local Bishop of Lacedonia. After meeting up with the needs of his family, he later desired to join the monastery and applied to the Capuchin monastery at Muro but was later rejected due to his poor health which he attained this due to fasting which made him unfit for religious and strenuous life.
At the age of 23, he joined the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and later became a lay brother. He continued to live his life in Poverty, Chasity, and Obedience.
He served the poor and helped in various jobs such as sacristan, gardener, porter, infirmarian, and tailor. He was called on to serve and counsel communities of religious women due to his wisdom and extraordinary piety. He also attained certain gifts such as levitation, bi-location, and the ability to read souls.
His charity, obedience, and selfless service for Christ, made him a role model of the lay brothers of Christ. The various miracles performed during his religious life and after his death made the people seek him in prayers and in times of suffering.
He is well prayed to by women in labor and during complications in pregnancy. St. Gerard Majella died of disease on October 16, 1755, at the age of 29, living in religious life for six years.
