St. Philomena is considered a very powerful intercessor. St. Philomena Novena is offered when you have a special petition especially in regards to children, mothers, or a lost cause.
St. Philomena is the patron saint of Living Rosary, infants, babies, youth, children, lost causes, sterility, and virgins. Her name Philomena means “daughter of light” and originates from the Latin word “Filumena”- filia meaning daughter and lumena meaning light, lamp, lantern, the light of day, the eye, clearness, and understanding.
St. Philomena was a martyr and known as the Wonderworker. She is the Patroness of the Children of Mary and an anchor of Hope in despair.
She is praised for her purity, obedience, and humility and prayed to by the world’s youth of diverse cultures and by all ages around the world.
St. Philomena was born on January 10, 291 in Corfu, Greece to a family of Greek royalty and was known to be the princess of Greece. She was born a Christian after her parents converted to Christianity.
As a child, she developed a strong faith and love for Christ. At the age of thirteen, St. Philomena had to travel with her parents to Rome to convince the Roman empire, not to war against the Greece province.
Emperor Diocletian of Rome wanted St. Philomena in hands for marriage upon refusal, she was sent to prison.
St. Philomena was tortured and scourged mercilessly several times for her continuous refusal in marriage which led to her life imprisonment.
The only reason she was being saved was by the strength of God and through her prayers.
St. Philomena was thrown into the river with a large anchor tied to her neck and was made to drown by the emperor’s orders, yet she survived. Emperor Diocletian ordered his men to shoot her with arrows until she was dead.
However, still St. Philomena survived. These events shamed and angered the Emperor but the people of Rome were amazed by the faith of St. Philomena and attracted a huge crowd towards Christianity to believe in the power of the One, True God.
Due to the embarrassment being faced by the emperor, he ordered St. Philomena to be beheaded.
St. Philomena was martyred for her faith and singular devotion to Christ on August 10,304.
St. Philomena was canonized by the church in 1837 after her remains were discovered in May 1802 at the Catacombs of Saint Priscilla at the Via Salaria in Rome, where her tomb contained three tiles reading ” “pax tecum filumena” meaning “peace be with you, Philomena”.
Also engraved on the tomb were emblems of a lily and palm indicating her virginity and martyrdom, an anchor, courage, and three arrows pointing in opposite directions, and one arrow in a curved line signifying fire.
The inscription and the symbols found are told to symbolize her life and the different tortures she endured in the testimony of her faith and love of Jesus Christ. St. Philomena’s feast day is celebrated on August 11.
