St. Erasmus Novena

St. Erasmus of Formia is the patron saint of pregnant women, sailors, and abdominal pain. If you are suffering from stomach pain or a woman in labor then you can recite St. Erasmus novena as described below.

About St. Erasmus

He was an early Christian martyr and an Italian bishop. He may not have experienced childbirth, but he had experienced similar anguish, allowing him to empathize with and plead for women in labor.

Saint Erasmus is a patron saint of sailors and is associated with Saint Elmo’s fire, which serves as a visible sign of his care over them. Erasmus is one of the 14 Holy Helpers, a group of saints who are all revered for their intercessional powers.

He is said to have been the bishop of Formia, where he was crucified, most likely during Diocletian’s persecution of Christians.

Saint Erasmus’ origins and birthplace are lost to history. We do know that he was chosen Bishop of Antioch in Asia Minor in the late third century, where he commanded the faithful.

When Emperor Diocletian ascended to the throne, he unleashed a wave of persecution against Christians, which included Antioch.

St. Erasmus found refuge in the Lebanon mountains, where he lived a life of prayer and fasting, going without food for days at a time. When he went too long without eating, a raven brought him supper, according to mythology. However, he was eventually identified by Emperor’s forces and brought to trial.

Since he is believed to have continued preaching even after lightning struck the ground beside him, Erasmus has become the patron saint of sailors. This caused sailors at risk of sudden storms and lightning to ask for his help.

Electrical discharges at ship mastheads were seen as a sign of his protection, and the phenomenon became known as “Saint Elmo’s Fire.”

Significance of St. Erasmus Novena

Because of his love for God, St. Erasmus endured great suffering. He has the ability to motivate women to persevere through their anguish for the sake of the child we are bringing into the world. He can also intercede for fathers who are assisting their wives in labor!

His sufferings resulted in the conversion of many people around him, and he continues to give God praise today. Our trials provide us the delight of a new life, a fresh tiny person to raise to love and glorify God. Around the year 303, St. Erasmus died. On June 2nd, his feast day is commemorated.

Preparatory Prayer

Almighty and eternal God! With lively faith and reverently worshiping Thy divine Majesty, I prostrate myself before Thee and invoke with filial trust Thy supreme bounty and mercy. Illumine the darkness of my intellect with a ray of Thy heavenly light and inflame my heart with the fire of Thy divine love, that I may contemplate the great virtues and merits of the saint in whose honor I make this novena, and following his example imitate, like him, the life of Thy divine Son.

Moreover, I beseech Thee to grant graciously, through the merits and intercession of this powerful Helper, the petition which through him I humbly place before Thee, devoutly saving, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Vouchsafe graciously to hear it, if it redounds to Thy greater glory and to the salvation of my soul. Amen.

Prayer in Honor of St. Erasmus

O God, grant us through the intercession of Thy dauntless bishop and martyr Erasmus, who so valiantly confessed the Faith, that we may learn the doctrine of this faith, practice its precepts, and thereby be made worthy to attain its promises. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
