About St. Francis de Sales
On August 21, 1567, St. Francis de Sales was born to an aristocratic family at Chateau de Sales, near Geneva, Switzerland, in the Kingdom of Savoy. He was a Bishop and a Church Doctor. Francis was wise and gentle at the same time.
He had a strong desire to serve God when he was a child. He had known for years that he had a calling to be a priest, but he kept it hidden from his family. His father wished for him to pursue a legal or political career.
Francis began his education at the University of Paris in 1580, and at the age of 24, he got his Ph.D. in law at the University of Padua. He never lost his love for God throughout his life.
He studied theology and practiced mental prayers, but he kept his faith a secret. He also practiced fencing and horseback riding to please his father.
Francis, Bishop of Geneva, in 1602. The reform of the clergy was one of the most serious difficulties he faced in the diocese. He went to work writing instructions and giving sermons, believing that learning for a priest constituted “the eighth sacrament” of the church.
In 1604, he encountered Jane Frances de Chantal, a recently widowed mother of four children, while preaching a Lenten series. This was the start of one of Christian history’s greatest spiritual friendships.
In 1610, he became her spiritual guide and founded a religious community of sisters, with Jane Frances de Chantal serving as superioress.
Other monasteries soon followed, and Pope Paul V officially recognized the Visitation of Holy Mary as a Catholic religious order in 1618.
Francis de Sales became a prolific writer in order to serve the numerous individuals committed to his care. In the Annecy edition, his writings are divided into 26 volumes.
Two of his publications, The Introduction to the Devout Life and The Treatise on the Love of God, have become spiritual classics.

Amen.
O blessed Francis de Sales, who on earth did excel in a life of virtue, especially in the love of God and neighbor, I earnestly ask you to take me under your compassionate care and protection. Obtain for me conversion of mind and heart. Grant that all people, may experience the depth of God’s redeeming and healing love.
Teach me to fix my eyes on the things of heaven even as I walk each day with my feet planted firmly on the earth. Help me, through the practice of virtue and the pursuit of devotion, to avoid anything that would otherwise cause me to stumble in my attempt to follow Christ and to be an instrument of the Holy Spirit.
Encouraged by your prayers and example, help me to live fully my sacred dignity with the hope of experiencing my sacred destiny: eternal life with God. Receive also this particular need or concern that I now lift up in prayer.
