St. John of God Novena

St. John of God Novena is prayed when you want to seek his intercession on his behalf for healing heart diseases and other ailments.

St. John of God was a soldier and later became a healthcare worker, with the help of his followers he established The Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God, a Catholic religious institute dedicated to serving the sick, poor, and people suffering from mental disorders.

He is the patron saint of Heart Disease, Hospitals, and the sick. The Catholic Church recognizes St. John of God as the patron saint of nurses in Catholicism.

St. John of God was born in Portugal on March 8, 1495, and later grew up in Spain and worked as a caretaker and trainer of animals for a particular household, and later received an education.

As a child, St. John of God was very pious and had immense faith in Jesus Christ and Mother of God. During the war between Spain and France, St. John was appointed as a soldier to fight for his nation, he had a strong faith and love for Mother Mary and always prayed to keep him safe.

After serving the war, St. John of God served as a shepherd where he received visions from Christ, where Child Jesus appeared to him and pronounced that the place of Granada will turn into his cross (a place of suffering).

St. John of God acted upon his vision and went to Granada and met John of Avila who had warned the people of the evils of wealth and encouraged the people to move towards repentance and faith.

When St. John of God tried to preach and convert the people towards faith, he was put into an asylum and severely punished for his acts.

St. John of Avila met with St. John in the asylum and requested him to serve God in a useful way to clearly understand his purpose.

St. John took responsibility and started helping the patients present in the asylum, by doing such works he was able to save money to build a hospital of his own in Granada where he served the sick and also preached to the people about the life of Jesus.

Upon caring for the sick and people with contagious disease St. John of God fell ill in 1550 and died upon the hospital’s altar praying in Granada.

During his service, St. John of God drew close to himself a group of followers who joined his service and established the Order of Hospitallers later named the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God, whose mission was to take care and serve the sick.

Facts

St. John of God’s feast day is celebrated on March 8 and he was canonized in 1690 and became the patron saint of booksellers, firefighters, and hospitals, and the sick.

Day 1

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Saint John of God,
heavenly Patron of the Sick,
I come to you in prayer to seek your help in my present sickness.
Through the love which Jesus had for you
in choosing you for the sublime vocation of serving the sick,
and through the tender affection
with which the Blessed Virgin Mary placed upon your head
a crown of thorns as a symbol of the sufferings
you would undergo in the service of the sick
to attain to your crown of glory,
I beg you to intercede for me to Jesus and Mary
that They may grant me a cure,
if this should be according to the Will of God.

How patiently you bore the sufferings of your own disease!
Teach me to carry with cheerful resignation
the cross that God has given me.
Let me never complain or lose courage.
Help me to understand that suffering
is a very important means of sanctifying my soul,
of atoning for my many sins,
and of reaping a plentiful harvest of merit for Heaven.
I trust in your great love for the sick
and in the power of your intercession to help them.
Help me, good St. John,
and beg the God whose name you bear to touch me
as He touched the sick while on earth,
that through His almighty power
health may return to my body.
And as you derived strength
in your own sufferings from the crucifix,
so may I be able to say what you did to Jesus Crucified:
“Lord, Thy thorns are my roses and Thy sufferings my paradise.”

Good Saint John,
lover of those who suffer
and special Patron of the Sick,
I confidently place before you my earnest petition.
