About St. Catherine of Siena

St. Catherine of Siena was a mystic and known for her holiness, asceticism, spiritual visions, and stigmata. She lived her life as a reformer and political activist and participated both in the religious and political affairs of the church.

Some of the powerful virtues carried on by St. Catherine of Sienna were to surrender self-will, discretion, and knowledge of self and knowledge of God.

She is also called a Doctor of the Church and remembered as one of the important figures of medieval Catholicism and has a prominent place in the history of Italian literature.

St. Catherine of Siena was born in Siena, Italy on March 25, 1347, during the uprising of plague in Italy. St. Catherine lost her siblings and later her sister, Bonaventura died of the same leaving her husband as a widower.

Catherine was proposed as a replacement to her sister which she hugely opposed and began fasting and cut her hair short in an act of defense and to mere her appearance.

She joined the Third Order of St. Dominic, which was a religious society near her home, where she learned to read and learned to serve the needful.

During her religious life, St. Catherine received many visions and was told to enter public life and to help and serve the poor and sick.

She visited various hospitals and homes where she helped the poor and sick and through her sincerity and compassion attracted a huge number of followers towards her mission to serve the poor and sick.

She was later involved in politics and became the key while working for the Pope in keeping the city-states loyal. St. Catherine started writing scribes and petitioned for peace and acted as an instrumental in persuading the Pope in Avignon to return to Rome.

He also played an important role in restoring the Papacy to Rome and in brokering peace deals during a time of factional conflict and war between the Italian city-states.

St. Catherine established a monastery for women in Sienna and is praised for her definitive work, and her prayers. The works done in both religious and political backgrounds paved the way to become the Doctor of the Church.

She is remembered as one of the most influential and popular saints in the Church. St. Catherine passed away on April 29, due to a stroke.

She was canonized a Saint in 1461.
