St. Cecilia Novena

Saint Cecilia also called St. Cecily was a martyr and is venerated by the Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches as the patron saint of music and musicians and is considered to be one of the most famous virgin martyrs of the early church and the most popularly discussed saint in history.

The name “Cecilia” originated from the Olebeian clan of Caecilii and this name was given to the Roman women. St. Cecilia was the noble lady of Rome who emerged in the 3rd century, she was very pious and wanted to devote her life and virginity to the Lord but was forced to marry Valerian, a pagan nobleman.

She was consumed by the Spirit of the Lord and gained the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit. During her wedding, St. Cecilia sat alone and sang to the Lord from her heart and told Valerian that the angel of the Lord was watching on her and would punish him if he sexually violated her and would love him if he respected her virginity.

Valerian listened to Cecilia and wanted to see the angel of Lord and Cecilia replied that he could if he would get baptized.

After following Cecilia’s advice he got baptized and saw the angel of the Lord standing beside her, crowning St. Cecilia with a chaplet of roses and lilies.

St. Cecilia along with her husband Valerian and his brother were killed at the hands of Turcius Almachius and St. Cecilia was stabbed three times in the neck with a sword, yet she survived for three days and pleaded that her home should be converted to a  blessed church.

Prayer to St. Cecilia Novena

Dear Saint Cecilia, one thing we know for certain about you is that you became a heroic martyr in fidelity to your divine Bridegroom.

We do not know that you were a musician but we are told that you heard Angels sing.
Inspire musicians to gladden the hearts of people by filling the air with God’s gift of music and reminding them of the divine Musician who created all beauty.

Amen.
