St. Catherine of Alexandria Novena

Why Pray St. Catherine of Alexandria Novena?

St. Catherine of Alexandria is the patron saint of young unmarried girls, students, apologists, philosophers, and aged ladies. Unmarried women under the age of twenty-five in France, notably those working in the millinery and dressmaking professions, commemorate her by praying St. Catherine of Alexandria Novena. Theologians, apologists, pulpit orators, and philosophers also seek her intercession by praying St. Catherine of Alexandria Novena.

About St. Catherine of Alexandria

Saint Catherine of Alexandria is a Catholic saint who was martyred in Alexandria, Egypt, about the year 305, according to Christian tradition. The Orthodox Church also recognizes her as a Great Martyr and Saint. Although there are no surviving primary records attesting to her existence, the fact that her memory and narratives about her have been preserved and passed down down the generations confirms her presence and heroic virtue and holiness.

St. Catherine was born into a wealthy family in Alexandria, Egypt, in the second century A.D. She was well-known for her education and beauty, and she studied science, philosophy, and medicine.

She had a lot of suitors, but she turned them all down since she didn’t think they were equal to her. She then became a dedicated and outspoken follower of Christ, with whom she fell in love.

She would use the tremendous abilities God had given her to teach others the truth of Jesus Christ, which was bigger than any philosophy or science book.

This young woman, according to St. Catherine’s Legend, embraced Christianity after seeing a vision. She debated 50 pagan scholars at the age of 18.

They, along with some 200 military and members of the emperor’s family, became Christians as a result of her wisdom and debate skills. They were all martyred.

St. Catherine of Alexandria has been venerated in the Church of the East since the tenth century, and in the West since the Crusades, when many churches have been dedicated to her and her feast day is observed with great solemnity, sometimes as a holy day of obligation.

She is the patroness of young women, philosophers, preachers, theologians, wheelwrights, millers, and other workingmen, and is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers of mankind among the saints in Heaven.

St. Dominic and Blessed Reginald of Orleans were reported to have seen her with Our Lady, and the Dominicans designated her as their special guardian.

Her name is still remembered fondly by Paris’s young unmarried women. St. Catherine is a role model for today’s youth, demonstrating that even the youngest of Christ’s disciples are endowed with insight, intelligence, understanding, and endurance.

St. Catherine used her skills to defend her faith in God and love for Christ, as well as to lead others to Christ so that they could experience the joy of being loved by God.

Day 1

Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Preparatory Prayer

Almighty and eternal God! With lively faith and reverently worshiping Thy divine Majesty, I prostrate myself before Thee and invoke with filial trust Thy supreme bounty and mercy. Illumine the darkness of my intellect with a ray of Thy heavenly light and inflame my heart with the fire of Thy divine love, that I may contemplate the great virtues and merits of the saint in whose honor I make this novena, and following her example imitate, like her, the life of Thy divine Son.

Moreover, I beseech Thee to grant graciously, through the merits and intercession of this powerful Helper, the petition which through her I humbly place before Thee, devoutly saying, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Vouchsafe graciously to hear it, if it redounds to Thy greater glory and to the salvation of my soul.

Prayer in Honor of St. Catherine of Alexandria

O God, Who didst distinguish Thy holy virgin and martyr Catherine by the gift of great wisdom and virtue, and a victorious combat with the enemies of the Faith; grant us, we beseech Thee, through her intercession, constancy in the Faith and the wisdom of the saints, that we may devote all the powers of our mind and heart to Thy service. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Invocation of St. Catherine

St. Catherine, glorious virgin and martyr, resplendent in the luster of wisdom and purity; thy wisdom refuted the adversaries of divine truth and covered them with confusion; thy immaculate purity made thee a spouse of Christ, so that after thy glorious martyrdom angels carried thy body to Mount Sinai. Implore for me progress in the science of the saints and the virtue of holy purity, that vanquishing the enemies of my soul, I may be victorious in my last combat and after death be conducted by the angels into the eternal beatitude of heaven. Amen.

Prayer

My Lord and my God! I offer up to Thee my petition in union with the bitter passion and death of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, together with the merits of His immaculate and blessed Mother, Mary ever virgin, and of all the saints, particularly with those of the holy Helper in whose honor I make this novena.

Look down upon me, merciful Lord! Grant me Thy grace and Thy love, and graciously hear my prayer. Amen
