About St. Catherine Laboure

On May 2, 1806, St. Catherine Labouré was born in a little town in Burgundy, France. She was the ninth child in a family of eleven. St. Catherine’s mother died when she was nine years old, and in her grief, she went to the only other mother she knew. “Now, dear Blessed Mother, you will be my mother,”  St. Catherine cried tearfully as she stood on her tiptoes to see the Blessed Virgin Mary statue in her home.

She joined the Daughters of Charity, a religious order of Sisters founded by St. Vincent de Paul, when she was 23 years old. Our Blessed Mother appeared to St. Catherine here in 1830, telling her to have the Miraculous Medal produced.

St. Catherine was aware of the innumerable miracles God was accomplishing through the Medal for the next 46 years, but she preferred to remain unknown.

Labouré claimed that the Blessed Virgin Mary had contacted her. On the eve of Saint Vincent de Paul’s feast day, July 19, 1830, she claimed to have heard the voice. She said that she heard a voice telling her she needed to go to the chapel. The voice told her that God wanted to send her on a mission once she arrived at the chapel. It was then that she realized she wanted to spend the rest of her life helping those who were less fortunate than herself. Catherine Laboure entered the Daughters of Charity hospice at Catillon-sur-Seine as a postulant in January 1830.

Three months later, she was back in Paris, this time to enlist in the Daughters of Charity Mother House Seminary. God blessed her with numerous remarkable visions shortly after she moved into her new house.

She saw the heart of Saint Vincent three times in a row, each time in a different aspect, above the reliquary in which his relics were displayed. She also saw our heavenly Lord in front of the Blessed Sacrament at other times, particularly at Mass, when he appeared as described in the liturgy of the day.
