Saint Thomas More was an English lawyer, judge, social philosopher, author, statesman, and Renaissance humanist. He is the patron saint of the adopted children, lawyers, civil servants, politicians, and difficult marriages.
St. Thomas was born in London, on 7 February 1477 to Sir John More and his wife Agnes. He was well educated and attended one of the best schools in London. St. Thomas graduated as a lawyer and practiced this profession under the monarchy.
Sir Thomas More married Jane Colt and lived in London, he later moved to Chelsea and wanted to give his wife proper education. The couple had four children namely Jane Margaret, Elizabeth, Cicely, and John.
Jane Colt passed away very soon and St. Thomas was forced to marry because the children needed a mother, he later married Alice Harpur Middleton.
In 1504, Thomas More was elected to represent the region of Great Yarmouth for the Parliament and in 1510 he contested to represent London. He served the people of London which great honesty and service. He later became a Privy Counselor in 1514.
He also developed as a theologian and a writer. One of his most famous works includes “Utopia,” a book that talks about the fictional, idealistic, and island society. Utopia is considered one of the greatest works of the late Renaissance and was widely read during this period.
King Henry VIII noticed Sir Thomas More’s work and dedication and presented him with greater responsibilities and titles such as, making him as the Under-Treasurer of the Exchequer, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster which gave him authorization over the northern portion of England, and later he became the Lord Chancellor.
He was known to be one of the most effective and loyal servants to King Henry VIII. During his service to the King, he had to carry out many works against the Church which made him doubt his faith.
He gradually stopped working against the Catholic religion which made King Henry VIII furious and had to remove him from all his titles and condemn him to the highest levels of punishment – treason, and death.
Following his death in 1535, it was revealed that Thomas More always wore a hair shirt, a garment that is itchy and is worn as a sign of atonement and repentance. He was a man of deep piety, asceticism, voluntary self-discipline, and penitence.

St. Thomas More Prayer for Good Humour
Grant me, O Lord, good digestion, and also something to digest.
Grant me a healthy body, and the necessary good humor to maintain it.
Grant me a simple soul that knows to treasure all that is good
and that doesn’t frighten easily at the sight of evil,
but rather finds the means to put things back in their place.
Give me a soul that knows not boredom, grumblings, sighs and laments,
nor excess of stress, because of that obstructing thing called “I.”
Grant me, O Lord, a sense of good humor.
Allow me the grace to be able to take a joke to discover in life a bit of joy,
and to be able to share it with others.
