St. Scholastica Novena

St. Scholastica is the patron Saint of Nuns, against Storms, against Lightning, against Rain. You can seek her intercession for any cause by praying to St. Scholastica novena.

About St. Scholastica

St. Scholastica was the twin sister of St. Benedict. Because the Benedictine order and monasteries bore his name, most people are familiar with him. They lived around the year 500. The siblings were born in Nursia, Italy, to a Roman noble family about the year 480.

Scholastica appears to have been committed to God from a young age, as Pope Gregory the Great writes in his account of Benedict’s life that his sister was “dedicated from her infancy to Our Lord.” Scholastica entered a convent at a young age, joining a Benedictine order for women.

Significance of St. Scholastica Novena

The mother of the twins died shortly after they were born. When Benedict was old enough, he went to Rome to study, leaving Scholastica to care for the Nursian estate with her father.

Benedict eventually abandoned his studies to become a hermit and ultimately the abbot of a monastic order in Italy. Scholastica’s early years are unknown. She built Plombariola, a women’s religious community near Monte Cassino, five kilometers from her brother’s monastery.

Scholastica was not allowed inside the monastery, so the twins visited each other once a year in a farmhouse. They used these moments to talk about spiritual things. Scholastica was inspired by her brother’s entire devotion to the Lord and resolved to emulate him.

Although it is not clear that she instantly became a nun, it is widely assumed that she lived for a time in a community of religious virgins. Some biographers say she eventually established a nunnery in the area.

Every year, Benedict and Scholastica met to discuss their respective religious houses’ spiritual concerns and ways of life. Benedict and a few colleagues met her in the guest house at Monte Casino because women were not permitted to enter his monastery.

Scholastica’s brother came to see her at the convent one day when she was quite sick. They spent the day singing psalms and discussing the spiritual life, including its benefits and obstacles.

When the evening arrived, they sat down to eat and continued their chat till late. The monastery’s strict restrictions only allowed a monk to visit his family for one day and never allowed him to stay away overnight.

On February 10, the Catholic Church honors St. Scholastica, a nun who was the twin sister of St. Benedict, Western Europe’s “founder of monasticism.”
