About St. Benedict Novena
Around 480 AD, St. Benedict was born in Norcia. It was a challenging historical period, just four years before the Western Roman Empire was formally overthrown by the deposition of the final Emperor, Romulus Augustulus. The sole true life of Saint Benedict is found in the second book of Pope Saint Gregory’s Dialogues, which was most likely composed in the years 593-594 AD.
Benedict was born in Rome in the year 480. He traveled to Subiaco, a town located on a mountain forty miles from Rome. For three years, he lived in a cave carved into the side of a cliff. A raven would occasionally bring him food.
He became quite famous. In a monastery in Subiaco, he soon had over a hundred and forty monks living with him. They were praying, clearing land, growing crops, teaching school, and feeding the destitute every day.
Benedict exhorted the monks to maintain a healthy balance of prayer, labor, and relaxation, driven by his desire to Cherish Christ Above All.
Benedict and his monks eventually established a big monastery on top of a mountain near Monte Cassino, Italy. Thousands of monks were sheltered there. They thereafter went on to educate all around Europe. Benedictines was their name. Monasteries can now be found all over the world.
St. Benedict is the patron saint of Europe.

Significance of St. Benedict Novena

Admirable Saint and Doctor of Humility, you practiced what you taught, assiduously praying for God’s glory and lovingly fulfilling all work for God and the benefit of all human beings. You know the many physical dangers that surround us today, often caused or occasioned by human inventions. Guard us against poisoning of the body as well as of mind and soul, and thus be truly a ‘Blessed’ one for us.
