About St. Phillip Neri

St. Phillip Neri was born in Florence in 1515 and displayed his impulsiveness and spontaneity when he was a child. In fact, he came dangerously close to losing his life in one event. The little child had hardly formed the concept of jumping on the back of a donkey loaded with fruit for the market when he did it.

Surprised, the donkey lost his balance, and the donkey, fruit, and youngster all fell into the cellar, with the boy ending up at the bottom! Thankfully, he was unharmed. Philip was sent to work with an elder relative who was a wealthy businessman at the age of eighteen because his father was not financially successful.

Philip has had a reputation for being pleasant and obedient since he was a child. “Good little Phil,” as he was affectionately known, was his nickname. Friars at the Dominican monastery of San Marco in Florence taught him his early lessons.

Philip moved to San Germano with a wealthy family member when he was 18 years old. He was brought there to help with the family business and maybe inherit it. Philip, on the other hand, had a mystical vision soon after his arrival, which he later described as his Christian conversion. This was an encounter with the Lord, and it had a significant impact on his life.

The Pope’s Vicar accused Philip of “introducing novelties” in 1555 and ordered him to stop holding Oratory gatherings. Philip was heartbroken, but he instantly obeyed. After the tragic death of his accuser, the Pope allowed him to resume the Oratory.

Despite all the difficulty this man had caused, Philip would not allow anyone to speak ill of him or even suggest that his untimely death was a divine punishment.

He quickly lost interest in property ownership and business participation. He was compelled by the Holy Spirit to live for and serve the Lord Jesus Christ and His Church in a radical way. Philip was the rector of San Giovanni’s church from 1564 to 1575, and it was at this time that he ordained his students.

Pope Gregory XIII handed him Sta. Maria in Vallicella in 1575, where he founded the Oratory Institute. The priests were given a residence, and Philip, who had been chosen provost of the congregation in 1577, lived there from 1583.

Philip took prayer very seriously, and he would pray for hours at a time. He was so easily led astray that he refused to preach in public and was unable to perform Mass in the presence of others. “Be humble and obedient, and the Holy Spirit will teach you,” he said when asked how to pray.

Philip died in 1595 at the age of eighty years after a long illness. He is a patron of Rome and has a feast day on May 26.

God has given me the gift to read the signs, interpret the dreams, decode the angel numbers since birth. Through rigorous practice and application, my gifts have been fine-tuned. Now, I use my gifts solely to help those distressed souls who have lost all hopes, those who have been left alone to fend for themselves, those whom the system doesn’t care anymore, those whom the mainstream science has ignored.
