About St. Alexander

The Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox churches, and the Roman Catholic Church all honor St. Alexander, a third-century bishop who is revered as a martyr and saint.

St. Alexander of Alexandria was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and was named Patriarch of Alexandria in 313 for his kindness, intense religiousness, and deep love for God.

When heresy developed in the form of Arius, a vicious priest envious of Alexander’s selfless and charitable deeds, as well as his status.

After that, St Alexander was noted for his passionate support of the Catholic religion.

In the late second century, Alexander was a student at Origen’s famous Christian school in Alexandria. He became Bishop of Cappadocia and was imprisoned for some years during Severus’ persecution (204-211).

He made a visit to Jerusalem after his release from jail and was ordained coadjutor bishop there in the year 212.

From the moment he became Bishop of Alexandria in 312, St. Alexander was tormented by problems. He was immediately met with opposition from Meletius of Lycopolis, whose zeal for fallen Catholics had driven him to schism. Kolluth, a priest who had usurped the right to ordain deacons and priests, was another source of contention for him.

However, Alexander’s greatest challenge was his feud with the priest Arius. Arius saw Alexander as a competitor, and Alexander’s choice of bishop thwarted his ambitions. Alexander made a generous gesture by putting Arius in charge of a significant parish.

Then Arius started preaching heresies that shook the church for decades. He said that Christ was not actually God, that the Son was a creature who did not exist at one point in time and might sin.

He is well known for being a member of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea, which was convened to establish some aspects of the church, including an early form of the Creed, which we still repeat today. During the council, Alexander is claimed to have had disagreements with Arianism, a growing religious movement at the time that was not recognized by the Orthodox Church.

There are a few hymns dedicated to Saint Alexander that can be found in the Orthodox Christian church service. Every year on August 30th, his feast day is commemorated.
