About St. Andrew Novena

Andrew was one of Christ’s original 12 apostles and the brother of Simon Peter, another apostle. Both lived and worked in Galilee as fishermen. There isn’t much else known about Andrew’s life. He is claimed to have gone to Greece to teach Christianity and was crucified on an X-shaped cross in Patras.

The diagonal cross, or ‘saltire,’ on Scotland’s flag symbolizes this. Andrew’s link to Scotland is based on the belief that some of his relics were kept at the location that is now St Andrews.

The bones were housed in a chapel, which became a pilgrimage site. The patron saint of both Greece and Russia is St Andrew.

Andrew was born in the early first century in the village of Bethsaida on the Sea of Galilee, according to the New Testament. Andrew was a fisherman, just like his younger brother, Simon Peter. Andrew’s name means “strong,” and he was well-known for his social abilities.

According to Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus was walking down the beach of the Sea of Galilee when he came across Andrew and Simon Peter fishing. The two were then asked to become followers and “fishers of men,” as he put it.

Andrew is said to have been crucified in the city of Patras in the Achaean province of Achaea in 60 AD. Early texts, such as the Acts of Andrew known to Gregory of Tours, describe Andrew as being bound rather than nailed to a Latin cross of the type on which Jesus is said to have been crucified.

However, a tradition developed that Andrew was crucified on a crux decussata, now commonly known as a “Saint Andrew’s Cross,” allegedly at his own request because he deemed himself unworthy to be crucified.

Andrew’s martyrdom iconography, depicting him chained to an X-shaped cross, does not appear to have been in vogue until the later Middle Ages.
