St. Blaise is the patron saint of wool combers and throat disease. If you or someone you know is suffering from throat-related ailments then St. Blaise Novena can be prayed to seek intercession on his behalf for curing the disease.
About St. Blaise
Saint Blaise was a physician and bishop of Sebastea. The saint’s existence is initially documented in Atius Amidenus’ medical documents, where he is cited as assisting patients with things stuck in their throats.
The “Acts of St. Blaise,” published 400 years after his martyrdom, record several remarkable aspects of St. Blaise’s life. Saint Blaise is thought to have started out as a healer before becoming a “physician of souls.”
He then went to a cave and remained in prayer. People frequently sought healing miracles from Saint Blaise. According to legend, Blaise was of noble birth and was made bishop of Sebastia after being schooled in the Christian faith.
Despite the fact that Christianity had been established as the state religion of Armenia around 300 CE, the Roman emperor Licinius began a persecution of Christians, and Blaise was discovered and apprehended.
While imprisoned, he miraculously saved a child from choking to death. Blaise was decapitated after being torn apart with wool combers’ irons.
The name St Blaise comes from Bishop Blaise, who was born in Armenia in the third century. He became a bishop of Sebaste as a Christian, but he was persecuted for his criticism of worship and was taken to trial, tortured, imprisoned, and finally murdered.
Bishop Blaise’s flesh was shredded by an iron comb used by wool combers as part of his torment, hence he was designated as the patron saint of the wool combing industry. He was beheaded on February 3rd, 298 AD, according to historical records. His name was spelled in several ways, including St Blayse, Blaise, and Blaze.
The name St Blaise first appears in official records in the early fourteenth century as Blayse, when Walter de Stapledon, Bishop of Exeter, built an early church in 1309.
Blaise was canonized in 1244. The saint’s fame in England is due to the woolen industry. Every seventh year, people connected with the Yorkshire woolen sector celebrate the St. Blaise festival in Bradford and Leeds.
A wooden screen dedicated to St Blaise can be found in the parish church in Lavenham, Suffolk, a well-known wool manufacturing area.

Significance of St. Blaise
The blessing of St. Blaise, which began in the 16th century, is still practiced and commemorated on his feast day in numerous areas. Two candles are consecrated and crossed in front of the assembly, or an oil-consecrated wick is placed on the throats of the faithful.
A priest, a deacon, or a lay minister may bestow this blessing. Blaise’s symbols are wax, taper, iron combs (the alleged tools of his passion), or two crossed candles; he is sometimes depicted in art as being in a cave with animals.

Amen.
Preparatory Prayer
Almighty and eternal God!
With lively faith
and reverently worshipping Thy Divine Majesty,
I bow myself before Thee
and invoke with devotion and trust Thy supreme bounty and mercy.
Illumine the darkness of my intellect
with a ray of Thy heavenly light
and inflame my heart with the fire of Thy Divine love,
that I may contemplate the great virtues
and merits of the saint
in whose honor I make this Novena,
and following his example imitate,
like him, the life of Thy Divine Son.
Moreover, I beseech Thee to accord graciously,
through the merits and intercession of this powerful Helper,
the petition which through him I humbly place before Thee,
devoutly saving, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
Vouchsafe thoughtfully to hear it,
if it redounds to Thy greater glory
and to the salvation of my soul.
Amen
