About St. Louis de Montfort

Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort was born in Montfort-la-Cane, Brittany, France, on January 31, 1673. In 1700, he was ordained as a priest at the Saint-Sulpice Seminary in Paris.

He loved researching the teachings of Church Fathers, Doctors, and Saints as they related to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom he was passionately devoted, while he was a seminarian.

Louis elected to join the seminary in Paris when he was 20 years old, in 1693. He became a mendicant and decided to walk the entire 230 miles to Paris. He arrived with the scruffy outer appearance of a beggar and the interior demeanor of someone who had entirely surrendered to God’s will.

Louis elected to attend a poorer students’ seminary, and it is possible that it was at this time that he dropped his surname, Grignon, in favor of the simpler and more humble identification with his natal village, Montfort.

In his passion for poverty, St. Louis de Montfort is a true son of St. Dominic. Louis is said to have embraced a dying leper on the streets in one reported occurrence. “Open the door for Jesus Christ!” he exclaimed as he took the ailing man to a sacred building.

One is reminded of St. Dominic’s sale of his own valuable books – dead skins – in order to feed the poor’s “live skins.” St. Louis’ impoverished once took up a collection to clothe their tattered buddy, much like St. Dominic, who did not even have his own habit but wore that of another.

Significance of St. Louis de Montfort Novena

Louis established the Daughters of Wisdom and the Missionaries of the Company of Mary, both of which cared for priests and brothers.

True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, which he wrote, has become a standard description of Marian devotion. Louis died in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sèvre, where he is commemorated by a basilica. His liturgical feast day is April 28th, and he was canonized in 1947.
