St. Barbara Novena

St. Barbara is one of the 14 Auxiliary Saints also known as Holy Helpers of the Church. She is the patron saint of artillerymen, miners, armorers, architects, mathematicians, and people who work with explosives.

Saint Barbara is also known as Great Martyr Barbara by the Eastern Orthodox Church; she was a great saint and martyr.

St. Barbara lived in Nicomedia, Bithnia, Roman Province to Dioscuros. She was adored by her father and was tutored in one of the best schools in arts and sciences.

At a very early age, St. Barbara reinforced her faith in the Roman-Greek Gods as this was the only faith that was ordered to be followed. St. Barbara lived most of her life in a tower hiding from the outside and other cultural influences by her father.

During this period St. Barbara understood that her faith was just a hollow imitation and started to learn about the Christian faith, the Church’s teachings and later got baptized.

The Christians were considered enemies of the state and were persecuted with severe punishment during this time.

St. Barbara was asked in marriage and refused this proposal as she wanted to surrender herself to God, this decision made her father fall into rage and made her face the consequences by submitting her to the counsels, she was ordered to unfollow the Christian practices upon her continuous refusal.

St. Barbara was put in jail and was tortured, later she was sentenced to death. St. Barbara accepted her fate joyfully and died on December 4th.
