Blessed Solanus Casey Novena

Solanus Casey was a priest of the Catholic Church and a member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. He was a wonderworker and a spiritual counselor and is remembered especially for his great works towards the sick, his faith, and his dedication towards his work. He was a great lover of the instrument- violin, a trait which he shared with St. Francis Solanus.

Bernard Francis Casey was his original name. He was born on November 25, 1870, in Oak Grove, Pierce County, Wisconsin, to Irish immigrants Bernard James Casey and Ellen Elizabeth Murphy.

He was an enthusiastic and cheerful individual and was praised for his working abilities. He contracted diphtheria at an early age which permanently damaged his voice making him lightly impaired.

He worked few jobs to support the family as a lumberjack, a hospital orderly, a guard in state prison, and as a streetcar operator. He witnessed a brutal murder during his time at work and later saw a drunken sailor stab a woman to death.

These acts changed him and acted as a call for him towards the priesthood. He enrolled at Saint Francis High School Seminary, to become a diocesan priest but was not able to cope up with the teachings and left the Seminary.

One day during his prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary, he came across a spiritual voice telling him to go to Detroit and serve the Lord.

Later he applied to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in Detroit, and gained the religious name of “Solanus” after Saint Francis Solanus; and received ordination to the priesthood on July 24, 1904, and was named as a “simplex” priest.

He served for two decades as a priest and later became an inspirational speaker and conducted services for the sick, and was known for his great compassion through consultations with visitors. He was known as an instrumental in cures and blessings.

The soup kitchen was founded in 1929 to provide food for Detroit’s poor during the Great Depression and Casey played an important role as one of the founders which are still in operation today.

As a violinist, he would always entertain a spiritual audience at the tabernacle and was known for his games of tennis and volleyball.

He died from erysipelas on July 31, 1957. The miraculous cures attributed to his intercession, both during his earthly life and death.
