About St. Bernard of Clairvaux
Born in 1090 in Fontaines, near Dijon, France, and died on August 21, 1153, in Clairvaux, France. Tescelin, Lord of Fontaines, and Aleth of Montbard, both of Burgundy’s highest nobility, were his parents.
Bernard, the third of seven children, six of whom were sons, was schooled with special care since a religious man had predicted his great destiny even before he was born.
Bernard was sent to a well-known school at Chatillon-sur-Seine, run by the secular canons of Saint-Vorles, when he was nine years old. He had a strong interest in literature and dedicated himself to poetry for a period of time. His professors admired him for his academic achievements, and he grew in virtue at the same time.
Bernard decided to devote his life to God and attend this new, experimental monastery at the age of twenty-two, still grieving for his mother. But, Bernard being Bernard, he wasn’t alone when he knocked on the door of the abbey with all the might of his thoughts and personality.
A long train of thirty of his siblings, relatives, and acquaintances, all noblemen, stood behind him at the door. Bernard was in charge. They were the ones who followed.
They aspired to be monks because he aspired to be one. They responded with a resounding “Yes” when he asked. This innate ability to command and lead foreshadowed what was to come.
Bernard prepared to be a soldier as he grew older, but he believed he could better serve God without killing others. He had several supporters among his friends and family. Bernard conducted an experiment with these members of his family and acquaintances.
For over a year, he had them all live, work, and pray together in his parents’ house. His peacemaking skills were evident then and later.
He became a monk and afterward an abbot at the Cistercian monastery of Clairvaux when he was 22 years old. Many men, including his siblings and widowed father, came to join the monastery, and it became necessary to construct further monasteries, even in other countries, to accommodate the growing numbers.
Bernard was persuaded by the Holy See to preach the Second Crusade throughout Europe. His oratory was so powerful that a large army was gathered and the crusade’s triumph looked inevitable.
The men and their leaders, on the other hand, did not share Abbot Bernard’s objectives, and the enterprise ended in a complete military and moral failure.
Bernard felt some responsibility for the crusade’s destructive effects. His death, which occurred on August 20, 1153, may have been hastened by this enormous burden.
