St. Adelaide is the patron saint of Brides, second marriages, abuse victims, against in-law problems, empresses, exiles, parenthood, parents of large families, people in exile, princesses, prisoners, step-parents, and widows. St. Adelaide novena prayers are very effective against marriage problems.
She is also referred to as Adelaide of Italy.
Adelaide was born in 931 in Burgundy (now in Modern-day Switzerland), France, the daughter of King Rudolph II of Burgundy, and was pledged in marriage to a man named Lothaire, the son and heir of his rival, Hugh of Provence, when she was only two years old.
Adelaide was to have a difficult existence that paralleled the struggle for the political power of the period, which she had come to symbolize. Lothaire was killed when she was still little.
She requested assistance from Germany’s Otho the Great. Following Lothaire’s death, she was courted by a number of kings and nobles before being married to Otho the Great of Germany, who had conquered Italy.
About St. Adelaide of Burgundy
St. Adelaide was a Holy Roman Emperor’s Empress. She was born in the year 931 in Upper Burgundy, in what is now Switzerland, to King Rudolf II of Burgundy.
Adelaide’s first marriage was a planned political alliance with the son of her father’s adversary, Lothair II of Italy. Adelaide and her first husband had only one child, Emma, who was born in 948 when Adelaide was seventeen years old.
In a crafty political maneuver, Adelaide’s husband’s adversary, Berengar II, poisoned her spouse and attempted to force Adelaide to marry his son, Adalbert. Adelaide flatly refused, fleeing Italy. Berengar’s troops followed her and imprisoned her for four months in a stronghold on Lake Como.
Adelaide died on December 16, 999, just a few days before the millennium. Handel and Rossini dramatized and remembered her exciting life in operas. Adelaide is the patron saint of brides and empresses, as one might expect.
She is also the patron saint of women and men who have faced difficulties in their relationships or marriages, a gentle acknowledgment of the hardships and sufferings a mother must have faced in raising a family amid medieval Europe’s tough political environment.
She is the patron saint of women who have been abused, second marriages, stepparents, and widows. Some of her relics are kept in the reliquary chapel of Notre Dame’s Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Significance of St. Adelaide Novena
Saint Odilo of Cluny wrote St. Adelaide’s biography. It solely covers the empress’ later years, after she had resigned from public life and devoted herself to ecclesiastical matters. Despite the fact that she was declared a saint and confessor by a number of German bishops and abbots, she is not listed in the Roman Calendar.
However, her feast day, December 16, is still commemorated in numerous German Catholic dioceses.
