The Fireman’s Prayer for Firefighters and Spouses

The fireman’s prayer is believed to be written by  A.W. “Smokey” Linn. It is no less than a tribute to the heroes (firemen).

The History of the Fireman’s Prayer

While most accounts of the Firemen’s Prayer conclude with Author Unknown, the world renowned poem was written by Firefighter A.W. “Smokey” Linn. As a young firefighter in 1958 Linn and his crew responded to a fire in which three children were trapped behind security bars and died in the fire.

According to his granddaughter, Penny McGlachlin he wrote this prayer after responding to a fire that did not go as planned and several lives were lost. There were no grief counselors to help the firefighters. Almost 50 years later, his prayer is still said by firefighters around the world before they begin their shift.

The Fireman’s Prayer was originally published in a book called, “A Celebration of Poets” in 1958. The last copyright of the book was 1998. It is the family’s desire that the credit for the Firemen’s Prayer goes to the author, A.W. Smokey Linn.

What Is The Significance Of The Fireman’s Prayer?

We all must give due respect to the people who serve other people and put their own lives at stake.

A firefighter is a hero who risks his life every day to protect complete strangers. Such selfless dedication to his or her duty is unparalleled in any job.

The beautiful fireman’s prayer can be read not only by those who are firemen but also by their family and friends so that they return safe and sound to their homes.

It takes courage to do such kind of work. You have to be selfless and reach out to help others, but you must remember that you can only do so if you save yourself first.

The fireman’s prayer will help you or someone serving this job to overcome the obstacles and save other lives. God will provide a fireman strength and guidance in every way possible.

Do not doubt his presence, you are His precious child and He shall protect you until the very end.

You must remember that you are doing a great deed and you shall be rewarded for the same. Your family will receive the blessings of the Almighty.

Firemen have a glorious history in all the countries especially the USA. During the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers, many firefighters perished or suffered grave injuries while trying to rescue the survivors. According to an estimate 343 firefighters lost their lives during the tragedy.

Similarly, in every natural or man-made calamity, the fire department is the first to respond and ensure that people and even animals are saved.

Fire fighters also tackle forest fires thus not only saving human lives and wild life but also the local flora and flora.

No matter what happens, don’t give up on yourself or God. You are stronger than you think and wiser than you believe. Don’t hesitate, just chant the prayer wholeheartedly and go forth to save the lives of innocent people.

Fireman’s Prayer by A.W. Linn

When I am called to duty, God
whenever flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life Whatever be its age.
Help me to embrace a little child
Before it’s too late,
Or some older person from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
and give the best in me,
to guard my neighbour
And protect his property.
And if according to Your will
I have to lose my life,
Please bless with Your protecting hand
My children and my wife.
