Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Origin & History

Like many other Christian hymns and prayers, it is tough to point out the exact time when Come Holy Spirit was written. While it isn’t easy to determine its true origins, Catholic theologists believe that the prayer has evolved from numerous antiphons, hymns, and sequences of liturgical tradition, especially those related to the Pentecost liturgy.

They have even pointed out that some of the lines quoted in this prayer are taken from other passages and prayers. For instance, “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love,” is used by Catholics during the Gospel acclamation at Sunday Mass during the Feast of Pentecost.

The next section of the prayer “Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth, is inspired by Psalm 104 verse 30, “When your breath is sent forth, they are created and you renew the face of the earth. It is believed that the rest of the prayer after this passage is adapted from a former opening prayer at the Feast of Pentecost.

Come Holy Spirit is considered a good example of a popular prayer dedicated to the Holy Spirit that was composed by devout Christians using verses commonly heard and sung during the Pentecost liturgy.

Significance of the Come Holy Spirit Prayer

The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in Christianity as it is a part of the Holy Trinity of Christianity. The Holy Spirit is believed to be a part of all faithful devout Christians along with God the Father and Jesus Christ his son.

In artistic renditions, the Holy Spirit is often depicted as a dove primarily because we are introduced to the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove at the baptism of Jesus in the New Testament.

The Holy Spirit is the living memory of Jesus Christ and the voice of the Church. The presence of the Holy Spirit helps us understand and inculcate the words and teachings of Jesus.

The Spirit reminds us that our attitudes, choices, and actions will drastically change for the better the more we abide by the teachings of God. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we can interpret our inner intuition and live life according to Jesus’s words.

It is important for our spiritual growth and the world’s healing for us to pray to the Holy Spirit. At the Pentecost, the Spirit descended upon Jesus’s disciples at Pentecost with tongues of fire rising up over their heads. Since the Holy Spirit is called known as the “breath of God,” it is believed that with this “breath” of the Holy Spirit, the earth can be renewed, re-created, and returned to God.

God has given me the gift to read the signs, interpret the dreams, decode the angel numbers since birth. Through rigorous practice and application, my gifts have been fine-tuned. Now, I use my gifts solely to help those distressed souls who have lost all hopes, those who have been left alone to fend for themselves, those whom the system doesn’t care anymore, those whom the mainstream science has ignored.
